Onekama Girls Take 2nd, Boys Take 3rd in 14 School Frostbite

ONEKAMA — After completing three of her four events, already covering a total of 800 meters on the track, Jaylee Brown had nine more feet to go — up.

The Onekama freshman had only five minutes to catch her breath after placing fifth in the 300 meter low hurdles, before she had to take to the sky in the pole vault, the event in which throughout the day she sporadically made her way to the final two in — between her other events.

“I’m really tired,” a seemingly exhausted Brown said as she stretched — eyes affixed to the bar she had to clear nine feet above her.

And clear it, she did — capturing her third first place finish of the day, along with the 100-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter relay with teammates Nichole Slater, Yumi Babinec and Danielle Ward.

“I took a look at all those girls and knew they were going to be really good,” Brown said of the competition she faced from the 13 other schools competing. “I think a little nervousness actually helped me.”

As a team, the Portager girls placed second overall with 73 total points, while Manton was first with 140.

The Onekama boys team placed third with 73, behind second placed Big Rapids CCA (95.3) and first placed Manton (137).

The Brethren Bobcats were also among the teams competing and though the boys were unable to place, Rebecca Priest, Kailyn Ware, Amanda Peck, Karen Lewis and Ashleigh Maier place in various competitions for the girls, helping the Bobcats place eighth overall with 22 points.

“Well, our boys team is very young,” Brethren coach Rob Isble said. “I was happy with all the kids though, they were all working hard.”

Friday’s warm temperatures were also inviting for all teams involved, making the Frostbite Invitational anything but frosty.

“We’ve been really lucky the last several years,” Onekama boys coach Mickey Story said. “We named it the Frostbite Invitational because of the time of year, but this is the third year in a row the weather’s been great and today’s probably the nicest day we’ve had yet. So, definitely no complaints weather wise.”

Portagers’ girls coach Bonnie Brown agreed. “I was thankful for the great weather which enabled many of our times, heights and distances to improve.”
