MANISTEE — Manistee Catholic Central swept Onekama in a conference
doubleheader Thursday night, winning 10-0 in the first game and 13-2 in
the nightcap.
Portagers coach Phil Sedelmaier summed up the sweep with few words.
“It was error-filled and we didn’t show up to play today,” he said.
MCC’s Ashley Bauman pitched the Sabers’ first game shutout, striking out
10 Onekama batters in five innings of play.
“It was good to get back on track,” Bauman said of coming off two
losses against Baldwin. “We had good defense today and communicated a
lot better. We were all on the same page.”
MCC coach Will Westphal echoed that thought.
“These were big conference games,” Westphal said. “They play really
well when they have confidence in themselves.” |
MCC co-coach Mike Roberts said the key to MCC’s success depends on the
mentality they bring to the games.
“Last time we came out flat,” Roberts said. “But, today we got talking
right away, and that’s when we play well —when we get going early.”
MCC’s Danielle Edmondson went 3-3 at the plate with an RBI while Haley
Doyle went 3-4 with five RBIs. Bauman and Alex Barnett each had two hits
for MCC.
Onekama had only two hits in the first game with Sherece Revolt and
Chelsea Miller each batting 1-2.
The Portagers managed to put more bat on the ball in the nightcap but
not enough to keep up with the Sabers.
Revolt batted 2-3 for Onekama while Brooke Sedelmaier and Paige Rutowski
each went 1-3, and Miller and Olivia Bolthouse each went 1-2. Miller
drove one run in.
For the Sabers, Edmondson and Bauman each went 3-4 with three RBIs, and
Doyle went 1-2 with 2 RBIs. The rest of the Sabers’ lineup all picked up
a hit.
Mimi Modjeski pitched the first four innings for MCC and tallied five
strikeouts. |
