BRETHREN — It was a battle on the
mound in Monday’s doubleheader between Onekama and Brethren as each team
depended on its key pitcher to gain an edge over the other.
The Bobcats’ Mackenzie Bennett and the Portagers’ Chelsea Miller
combined for a total of 23 strikeouts over the course of both games —
Bennett with 12 and Miller with 11 — but it was Onekama who walked away
with the wins, 6-3 and 14-5.
“Mackenzie threw really well tonight,” Bobcats coach Erin Swiatlowski
said. “It’s probably the hardest I’ve ever seen her throw, and it was
just working for her today, so I was really proud of her.”
Bennett struck out five Portager batters in the first game, while Miller
struck out a season-high eight Bobcats.
At the plate for the Bobcats,
Samantha Poma went 1-3 and Gabby Regula went 3-3 and scored two runs.
For the Portagers, Sherece Revolt went 1-3 with an RBI, Paige Rutowski
went 2-2 with an inside-the-park homerun and an RBI, Nicki Slater had a
double with an RBI, and Diamond Kimpel had a double and two RBIs.
In the nightcap, Bennett added nine strikeouts to her total, while
Miller added another three.
At the plate, Bennett went 2-3 with a double for the Bobcats while
Regula and Elena Hikock also went 2-3 and Sarah Colbrook, Jessica Tighe
and DJ Johnson all had a hit.
For Onekama, Katie Prielipp went 3-4 with two RBIs, Rutowski went 3-4
with four RBIs, Brooke Sedelmaier went 2-4 with two RBIs and Revolt and
Ambir Parmelee each had an RBI.
“Defensively we played a whole lot
better than what we have been,” Onekama coach Phil Sedelmaier said. “We
had three errors so there’s still room for improvement, but we really
played much better. |

“It’s nice to win a doubleheader
because it’s been a while since we’ve done that. When we play solid ‘D’
which we’re capable of, we can compete with anybody.”
Even with the losses, Swiatlowski is still seeing many positives with
her Bobcats.
“I’m really proud of their bats,” she said. “We’re definitely putting
the bat on the ball better. We just need to get our defense and offense
to click at the same time, and we’re capable of doing that. So, we’re
going to continue to practice and work hard and focus on the positive
things that are happening and hopefully it will all come in to place.” |
