JV Chips Split with Onekama Varsity

FROM MANISTEE NEWS ADVOCATE STAFF REPORTS

MANISTEE — After dropping the first game 9-2 to the Manistee junior varsity team, Onekama bounced back in the nightcap to split its doubleheader with the Chippewas, 11-10.

In the first game, Brooke Sedelmaier went 2-3 for the Portagers (8-11-1), while Sherece Revolt, Paige Rutowski, Nicole Slater, and Olivia Bolthouse each had a hit. Slater and Katie Prielipp each had an RBI.

Alyssa Dewitt picked up the win on the mound for the all freshman and sophomore Chippewas after allowing an unearned run and no walks with six strikeouts. "That may have been her best game overall,” said Manistee coach Gary Cole. “She’s really coming along nicely.”

At the plate, Kalee Engstrom went 3-3 with a double and triple, Danielle Dufon went 2-3 with a double, while Shawnna Tetzlaff, Alexa Schneider and Hannah Sartor each had a hit.

“Overall, it was one of our better games,” Cole said. “It was nice to beat a varsity team.”

Despite five strikeouts from Onekama’s Chelsea Miller on the mound, eight errors from the Portagers’ defense proved to be costly. “It definitely didn’t help us,” Onekama coach Phil Sedelmaier said. “We struggled defensively and made way too many errors to win.”

In the nightcap however, the Portagers not only cut their errors down from eight to three, they got their bats going at the plate.

Onekama put up seven runs in the first inning to Manistee’s two. But, by the bottom of the sixth, the Chippewas had the score knotted at 10.

Before Manistee could record an out, the Portagers’ Slater, Diamond Kimpel and Alexis Howard each had a base hit, with Howard’s bringing in Slater for the win.

Along with Howard’s RBI, Revolt went 3-4 with an RBI, Sedelmaier went 2-2, Miller had a hit and two RBIs, Slater went 2-4, and Kimpel had a hit and an RBI.

“It was a much better game,” Phil Sedelmaier said. “We played much better defensively. I shook up the infield a little bit because we had to do something.

“We’ve lost three straight, so this was a big win for us,” he added.

Tetzlaff led Manistee at the plate with a triple, Dufon and Kaylyn Cabot each had a hit, while Danielle Brenner pitched most of the game for the Chippewas.
