Athletic Boosters Present Certificates to Scholar Athletes

At the Onekama School Board Meeting Monday, December 8th, 2008, Kathleen Block of the Onekama Athletic Boosters, gave out the Scholar Athlete Awards for the first marking period to Stacey Keith and Ryan Pienta.

Stacey Keith, the daughter of Lanette and Duane Keith, is a senior at Onekama.  She played basketball during her 9th, 10th and 12th great years, Softball during 9th and 10th grades, and Track and Volleyball for all four high school years.

Stacey was 1st Team All Conference in Track, Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball. (In softball she was all district)  During the 2006-2007 school year she was voted Athlete of the year.

Her future plans include attending West Shore for Criminal Law and then transferring to a university.

Ryan Pienta, the son of Michelle and John Pienta, is a sophomore at Onekama.  He ran Cross Country in 9th and 10th grade. He played basketball for one year and ran track last year.

Ryan was 1st Team All Conference in Cross Country as well as All Region Cross Country. 

Ryan has been president of his class for two years as well as a member of the Student Council. He plans to attend Grand Valley and study Sports Therapy.

Criteria for Scholar Athlete

The Athletic Boosters ask the coaches of the qualifying marking period to nominate a male and/or female athlete from their sport.  All nominations are then turned into Duane Keith, athletic director, and Gina Hagen, Principal. 

The criteria for these nominations are Consideration of GPA, Citizenship, Team/Community Contribution, and Sportsmanship/Conduct. 

The awardees are then presented a scholar athlete medal for their varsity jacket. A certificate by the athletic boosters is presented at the next school board meeting following the selection process. All in all there will be 8 scholar athletes per school year
