Manistee Catholic Central and Onekama both advanced from Thursday’s district tournaments and will head to the regional round next week.

The Sabers and Portagers qualified as teams for the regional finals after finishing in the top six at the district events.

MCC placed second among 11 teams in a Division 4 district round at Chase Hammond Golf Club in Muskegon. The Sabers shot 339, 15 shots behind winner Muskegon West Michigan Christian, which was playing on its home course.

“It’s a tough course,” said MCC coach Pete Solwold. “It’s more like a regional course than a district course.”

Zack Bialik led the Sabers with an 81, followed by Zach Luomala (83), Nick Kolanowski (85) and Zach Smith (89).

“It was a pretty solid outing,” Solwold said. “I was pleased with the guys getting into the 330s.

“The degree of difficulty of the course — I think a lot of teams would shoot 10 to 15 over their average. It was a good test.”

MCC will host a Division 4 regional event at Manistee Golf & Country Club on May 28.
In a Division 4 district tournament at Missaukee Golf Course in Lake City, Onekama qualified for the regional round by finishing sixth among 13 teams after shooting 357. Jake Matthews led the way with an 84, followed by Drew Griswold (86), Levi Capper (93) and Brenner Johnson (94).

“I guess we would have liked to score better or finish a little higher, but we’re happy to be in the top six,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow.

Brethren shot 379 and finished seventh, one spot out of advancing as a team to the regional. However, Roger Mullet and Patrick Spalding will represent the Bobcats at the regional after finishing among the top six individuals not part of a top six team. Mullet shot an 84, Spalding an 86, while Brethren’s Justin Brown came in with a 99 and Dillon VanderBie a 110.

“We always want the whole team to qualify for regionals and get them all there,” said Brethren coach Tom Anderson. “I’m disappointed that the whole team didn’t qualify but glad to see Roger and Patrick make it.”

Mullet, Spalding and the Portagers will play in a Division 4 regional at Mistwood on May 28.

Manistee High School finished in a similar situation as Brethren, taking seventh place and missing out on the regional round by one spot. The Chippewas shot 390 in a Division 3 district at Belvedere in Charlevoix, but seniors Casey Hogan and Greg Olsen will move on to the regional at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids on May 28.

Hogan shot a 90 to qualify as an individual while Olsen won a playoff on the second hole to also qualify. Kody Elzinga shot a 101 while Alan Potts came in with a 102.

“It’s a very challenging golf course,” said Manistee coach Mike Swanson. “I was happy for my seniors.”
