MANISTEE — As a change of pace,
golf teams from the West Michigan D League got together Thursday at the
Manistee Golf & Country Club and played for fun.
However, competition lingered close behind.
“This is for bragging rights,” Onekama’s Drew Griswold laughed.
Manistee Catholic Central hosted the Portagers, as well as Brethren,
Walkerville and Mason County Eastern at the scramble format event.
Each school brought their top six
golfers who were split into two teams of three.
MCC’s top tier finished the nine-hole round with a 30, the day’s top
score.
The Sabers’ top group comprised of Zack Bialik, Nick Kolanowski and Zach
Luomala.
“We were hitting the ball solid all day,” Luomala said of his groups’
round, which included two eagles.
“It takes a lot of the pressure off,” Kolanowski said of the scramble
format.
“You always have someone else you can count on,” Bialik added.
Brethren’s Patrick Spalding, Roger Mullet, and Dillon Arlt finished with
a 33 along with Onekama’s Griswold, Levi Capper, and Jake Matthews, and
the Mason County Eastern trio.
“This is just a fun break from all the competition in the conference
jamborees,” the Bobcats’ Mullet said.
Onekama’s Brenner Johnson, Skyler
Kimpel, and Cody Sievert came in with a 35, leading all second flights.
Brethren’s Justin Brown, Dillon VanderBie, and Chuck Schoedel shot a 37
while MCC’s Alec Bigalke, Nolan Gunia and Zach Smith finished with a 39. |

“Everyone was relaxed and having
fun,” MCC coach Pete Solwold said. “But, there was still a lot of good
golf played today, too.”
“It was a fun event for the kids,” Brethren’s coach Tom Anderson said.
“I was happy with the way our kids played. It’s a little bit more
relaxing for them, but we still have a conference meet coming up and the
districts, so that should be exciting for them too.” |
