Cody Sievert, Levi Capper, Brenner Johnson, Drew Griswold and Jake Matthews combine to set a new team 9-hole scoring record on the back nine of the Heathlands on May 13, 2009.  Jake shot 38, Drew 39, and Levi, Brenner and Cody all shot 40 to establish a new team score of 157.  The former record of 161 was set two years ago at the Heathlands on the front 9 by Jordon Pomeroy, Drew Griswold, Levi Capper, and Jake Matthews.

PREP GOLF: Onekama Breaks School Record

Portagers shoot 157 in win over Chippewas

FROM Manistee News Advocate STAFF REPORTS

ONEKAMA — The rain wasn’t the only thing falling for Onekama High School golf team at The Heathlands Wednesday.

The Portagers broke a two-year old school record by firing a 157 on the par 36 back nine of its home course in a win against Manistee. The old record for Onekama was 161 on the par 36 front nine at The Heathlands. “I’m happy tonight,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “I’m elated.”

The Portagers benefited from a solid effort from all six golfers, who took advantage of soft greens. Jake Matthews led the way for Onekama with a 38, Drew Griswold shot a 39, Brenner Johnson, Levi Capper and Cody Sievert all turned in 40s and Skyler Kimpel posted a 46.

“It was sweet,” Zadow said. “These guys shot so well tonight and made me so proud.”

Zadow wasn’t the only coach to take note of the way the Portagers played Wednesday.

“I was really impressed with how Onekama played today,” said Manistee coach Mike Swanson. “They played solid from top to bottom. They handled themselves well.”

Manistee finished 19 shots behind Onekama with a 176.

Casey Hogan and Greg Olsen led the way with matching 40s, Kody Elzinga shot a 44 and Alex Meyers fired a 52.

“We got off to a bad start,” Swanson said. “I was happy to get the match in and get a little bit of experience.”

Jake Matthews watches the flight of his tee shot off the 11th tee at the Heathlands on Wednesday, May 13th.  Onekama played Manistee High on the back nine in a match that was a makeup of a scheduled season opener.  Jake went on to par the 11th hole on his way to recording a 38.  Jake was the match medalist and the low Onekama scorer.

Skyler Kimpel grimaces after making contact with his tee shot on the 11th tee at the Heathlands.  Skyler struggled on this hole making a triple bogey before putting his game back together to post a 46 on his round for the day.  Skyler, unfortunately, proved to be the only Portager who was not a part of establishing a new team 9-hole scoring record.  He is only a sophomore and has two more years of high school eligibility to position himself in that elite group of golfers.

Cody Sievert begins the backswing of his tee shot on the 11th tee at the Heathlands on Wednesday, May 13th.  Cody bogeyed the hole along with three other holes, while paring the remaining five holes on his way to shooting a personal best score of 40.  Cody was one of three Onekama golfers who shot a score of 40 on the rainy afternoon.

Brenner Johnson watches his tee shot fly into the 14th green at the Heathlands.  Brenner went on to take a par 4 on the hole.  He had earlier birdied the 12th hole in route to shooting a 40 for the round.  Brenner was one of three Onekama shooters to record a 40 for the round and be one of five to establish a new school 9-hole team record.

Levi Capper makes a great recovery shot from a position behind the 14th green.  Levi overshot the green and had to chip from a location that found him dodging low hanging tree limbs.  He went on to bogey the hole in route to shooting a 40.  Levi, like, Brenner and Cody will place his name on the new school 9-hole team record.

Drew Griswold gets himself out of a sand bunker in front of the 17th green.  Drew put his tee shot in the bunker, his second shot on the green and two putted for par.  Drew shot a 39 to post the second lowest score for the day.
