PREP GOLF:Portagers improve to 5-0 with win at Pinecroft

From Manistee News Advocate Staff Report

BEULAH — The Onekama High School golf team kept its perfect record intact this season with a win over Frankfort and Manton Thursday at Pinecroft Golf Course in Beulah.

The Portagers (5-0) shot 167, Frankfort finished second with 190 and Manton was third with 207.

“I think overall, we were pretty pleased,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow.

Drew Griswold was the match medalist for a second straight time after shooting a 40 on the par-36 front nine. Also scoring for Onekama were Levi Capper (41), Brenner Johnson (42) and Jake Matthews (44).

“That’s a pretty solid grouping,” Zadow said. “We’re getting a little more consistent each match.”

Skyler Kimpel and Cody Sievert also played for Onekama but didn’t factor in the scoring. The Portagers also had eighth graders Derek Hobart and Quinn Matthews with them, and manager Alex Welch. Hobart shot a 49, Matthews a 50 and Welch, a freshman, shot a 52.

“Frankfort gave us the opportunity to bring three extra players, and they shot well,” Zadow said.

Jake Matthews, playing in a modified shotgun start, takes a practice swing on the 3rd tee at Pinecroft Golf Plantation in preparation for his first drive of the day.  Jake hit it long and straight down the middle of the fairway to begin his attack on the par 5 dogleg.

Taking advantage of an invitation by the Frankfort Golf Team to bring a few extra players to the match today, Onekama brought along three additional players.  Derek Hobart, an eight grade manager, looks on as bus driver, Mr. Steve Fredricks who volunteered to play along with the extras, prepares to putt on the 10th green.  Quinn Matthews, another eighth grade manager to his right, looks on as Alex Welch, a freshman, studies up his putt from a crouched position.

Levi Capper prepares to send his approach shot into the 8th green after positioning his tee shot in the middle of the fairway inside 100 yards from the green.  Levi stuck his approach shot and went on to two putt for par.  Levi leads the team with a 40.7 scoring average after 3 matches.

Cody Sievert studies up his putt on the 6th hole at Pinecroft.  Cody made the putt after positioning himself within 7 feet of the cup after making a nice approach shot to the green.  The par 4, 6th hole is known as one of the toughest greens to putt on the course.

Skyler Kimpel places his wedge back in his golf bag after completing his chip shot onto the 8th green at Pinecroft.  He appears pleased with his shot that found its way to a final resting place within five feet of the cup.  He made his bogey.

Drew Griswold stands over his tee shot on the 5th hole at Pinecroft contemplating placement of his tee shot to a green he could easily drive.  With a large bunker to the right front of the green, Drew chose to stay left leaving himself a chip shot to the green.  Drew went on to be the match medalist for the day for a second time in a row shooting a 40.

Brenner Johnson looks over a long par putt at Pinecroft.  Brenner began play on the par 3 2nd hole.  After struggling a bit to get to the green,  he came within inches of making his par putt only to have to walk away with a bogey.  He came back with a birdie on the final hole of the match to finish play with a 42.
