Onekama — Twenty-four hours after the Onekama boys tipped off their rivalry game with Bear Lake, it was the girls’ turn to host the Lakers Friday night, in a match-up the Portagers went on to win, 52-34.

“I thought we came out aggressive right away,” Onekama coach Nathan Bradford said. “It seems like it has been taking us a while to get going lately, but tonight we played pretty good from the get-go.”

Taylor Hagen led the Portagers (8-3, 8-3) with 14 points. “We had a good game,” Hagen said. “We were able to make our open shots.”

Also scoring for Onekama was Chelsea Miller and Sherece Revolt with nine points apiece, Paige Rutowski had eight, Stacey Keith scored six, Jennica Mathieu had four, and Olivia Bolthouse added two.

Revolt had a game-high 11 steals and five assists while Miller led the Portagers with nine rebounds.

We had a great first half,” said Bear Lake coach Scott Brown. “The girls played hard but we start to run out of gas as the game goes on.  When we run out of gas, we get lazy,” Brown added, “Lazy passes turn into turnovers, and turnovers turn into easy buckets. We have to keep the gas tank full and work on the fundamentals.”

Ashley Crawford led the Lakers (6-7, 4-6) with 14 points, while Tobi Schoedel had nine, Ashley Ringel scored seven, and Rachael Smith added four.

The game began to look like a defensive battle between the rivals, as both teams were knotted at five for four straight minutes.

With two minutes left in the quarter however, both teams began to make up for lost time. The Portagers scored 10 more points before the first quarter ended while the Lakers scored five.

Going into the second quarter down 15-10, the Lakers looked to Crawford to keep up with the Portagers spread-out scoring. Crawford had nine points in the quarter which included a five-for-five shooting display at the line.

The Portagers led the Lakers by four points at halftime, 29-25.

Bear Lake scored the first basket of the half which cut the Portagers’ lead to two, but that would be the Lakers’ only points of the quarter.

The Portagers managed to get 10 third-quarter points and capture the game’s first double digit lead.

Onekama controlled the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lakers 13-7. The victory gives the Portagers their second win over Bear Lake this season.

Bear Lake junior varsity team beat the Portagers 39-47. Shelby Dansby and Ashley Rupert each had 14 points for the Lakers. Jaylee Brown scored 14 for Onekama.
