Onekama's JV Team Tops Brethren

January 19, 2009

JV Lady Portager basketball hosted the Brethren Bobcats in their second meeting of the season.  The game started out close like in their first meeting back in December.  The second quarter brought with it strong offensive and defensive play for the Portagers.  The Portagers outscored the Bobcats 14-1 and increased the score at halftime to 24-9.  The Bobcats came out in the second half and scored 18 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Portagers finished them off with a score of 45-27.

A strong defensive performance was the key to this victory, but the offense was also firing on all cylinders putting up a season high 45 points.

Lexi Howard showed true offensive potential putting up 14 points.  Danielle Ward continued her strong post play with an 11 point game.  Other key contributors were Nicki Slater with 6 points, Ashley DeRooy with 5 points, Emily Pomeroy with 4 points, Brooke Sedelmaier with 3 points, and Lindsay Nesburg with 2 points.

Lexi also kicked it in on the defensive end pulling down 9 boards and getting 3 steals.  Brooke and Danielle also had strong finishes defensively.  Brooke had 6 rebounds and 4 steals while Danielle had 6 rebounds and 3 steals.  Ashley finished with 5 rebounds while Nicki, Emily, and Lindsay each finished with 2 rebounds.

The JV Lady Portagers head to Manistee Catholic Central for their third meeting on Thursday, January 22, 2009.  The Portagers look forward to their final meeting and look to come home with their eighth victory.  Go Portagers!  ~Coach Torrey
