Lady Portager basketball
traveled to Lake Leelanau St. Mary for a non-conference match-up. The
JV squad seemed to be pumped up for the game, but right away we found
ourselves struggling to find a basket. The first quarter was low
scoring with Leelanau finishing with 11 points and us with 6 points.
The second and third quarters went in Leelanau’s favor and ended with
the Portagers down 42-17 to start the fourth quarter. A spark of life
came finally in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to get the win
in this contest. The final buzzer left the Portagers with yet another
loss with a score of 47-34.
Leelanau played at an up-tempo
pace from the tip of the ball, but the Portagers struggled to find a
basket for the first three quarters of the game. Even with the game
looking to end in a blowout, the girls rallied together to bring the
game to a close finish scoring as many points in the fourth quarter as
they had in the first three. |

Offensively, Danielle led the
team with 9 points while Jaylee finished second with 8 points. Lindsay
added 7 points and Lexi was next with 4 points. Nicki, Emily, and
Brooke finished with 2 points each.
Defensively, Danielle and
Jaylee each finished with 7 boards and 3 steals. Lexi had 5 rebounds
and 2 steals while Nicki pulled down 4 rebounds and stole the ball 4
times. Lindsay had 3 rebounds, Brooke had 2 rebounds, and Emily and
Ashley each pulled down 1 rebound.
The
Portagers are right back at it on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, for a
rematch with Big Rapids Crossroads for a make-up game due to a weather
cancellation. The Portagers look to bounce back for a second win
against the Cougars. Good luck Lady Portagers!
