Frankfort Runs Past Onekama

ONEKAMA — If the Portagers were playing a slot machine, they would have hit the jackpot.

But, it’s hard to win basketball games with quarter scores of 7-7-7-7.

Onekama struggled getting its offense going and had a hard time containing Frankfort in 57-28 loss on Monday night.

“They played good defense and we struggled a bit on the offensive end,” said Onekama coach Nathan Bradford.

The Portagers (11-6, 10-5) were led in scoring by senior Chelsea Miller, who had 11 points and four rebounds.

Also for Onekama, Sherece Revolt had seven points and three steals, Stacey Keith had five points and grabbed four rebounds, Olivia Bolthouse scored all four of her points in the fourth quarter and Paige Rutowski had one point.

While Onekama had just five players in the scoring column, nine Panthers (11-7) tallied points, led by Sara Loney with 12, while Liz Boman and Emily Gray scored eight apiece.

Even before the opening tip, it was clear that the Portagers would have trouble with the Panthers taller front line, which proved to be the case.

“They’ve come a long way,” Frankfort coach Tim Reznich said of his players. “We’ve been working a lot on our post this season. They’re still young and you still see that, but they’ve come a long way. We’re getting there, we’re close.”

Frankfort jumped out to an early lead and had a 13-7 advantage after the first quarter. But, with the Panthers in foul trouble, the Portagers stayed in the game at the free throw line.

Onekama scored all seven of its second-quarter points from the line, going 7-11 in the quarter and finishing 10-19 in the game.

But, the Portagers didn’t make enough free throws to stay close and went a total of 9:35 without a making a shot from late in the first quarter to early in the third.

“We went a while without a field goal,” Bradford said.

Frankfort led, 32-14, at halftime, and increased its advantage to 50-21 after three quarters.

At that point, Onekama had just three scorers in the book and the Portagers didn’t hit a single 3-pointer in the game.

"I need the perimeter girls to score more points,” Bradford said.

Both teams managed just seven points apiece in the fourth quarter.

For the Portagers, it was their third loss in four games, and Onekama will host West Michigan D League co-leader Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy on Thursday.

“Hopefully we can get these ones out of the way before districts,” Bradford said. “It will keep the girls working hard — that’s all I can ask.”
