Portagers Fall to Cardinals

Manistee News Advocate staff report

ONEKAMA — Onekama suffered from being short-handed Friday night and lost, 59-36, to Mason County Eastern.

“We played pretty hard, but we were pretty short-handed,” said Portagers’ coach Nathan Bradford. “We have a lot of girls sick, so we only played with seven tonight.”

Due to foul trouble, seven players eventually turned to only four before the game ended.

Chelsea Miller led the Portagers with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Also for Onekama, Paige Rutowski had 10 points and seven rebounds, Stacey Keith scored three points and grabbed six rebounds, while Diamond Kimpel added three points and five rebounds.

“We played pretty hard in the first half,” Bradford said. “We got tired in the second half and had too many turnovers.”

The Portagers were down by single digits after the first (14-10) and second quarter (26-19), but they were unable to keep up with the Cardinals in the second half.
