Onekama vs. Brethren – Game 1, December 5, 2008
The first game of
the season is always nerve racking. You wonder if you’ve prepared
enough for the challenge, or if you’ve gone over everything that needed
to be covered. The JV Lady Portagers traveled to Brethren to take on
the Bobcats in the first game of the season. The game turned out to be
so close that you couldn’t help but sit at the edge of your seat.
The first quarter
ended with the Bobcats leading 11-6. A change in the defense forced
several turnovers, but the Bobcats went into the halftime break with a
19-12 lead. The Portagers continued with the same defensive strategy
and closed the gap to within 3 to end the third quarter with a score of
23-20. The fourth quarter continued to be stressful with such a close
score. The Portagers took the lead, but with 15 seconds left the
Bobcats took the ball down the court and scored to tie the game 26-26.

Unfortunately, the scorer was
fouled and was sent to the free throw line making the extra point to put
the Bobcats ahead by one. The Portagers had called a timeout with a
plan to get a quick score with 8 seconds left on the clock. The
Portagers inbounded the ball to Jaylee Brown who passed to Lindsay
Nesburg on the wing. Lindsay squared up and shot banking it in for the
go ahead score with 2 seconds remaining. The Bobcats inbounded the ball
and time expired. The Portagers won 28-27.
Leading the Portagers in
scoring was Emily Pomeroy with 8 points and Jaylee Brown with 6 points.
Danielle Ward, Lindsay Nesburg, and Lexi Howard each had 4 points and
Ashley DeRooy finished with 2 points. On defense, Jaylee also led the
team with 11 steals and 6 rebounds. Emily finished with 3 rebounds and
2 steals. Ashley had 3 rebounds and 5 steals. Danielle ended with 3
rebounds and 3 steals. Brooke Sedelmaier finished with 1 rebound and 1
steal. Lindsay added 2 rebounds and 3 steals, and Lexi wrapped it up
with 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Congratulations JV Portagers!
