Onekama: From the
Manistee News Advocate— For the second consecutive season,
Onekama’s season ended with a loss to Frankfort as the Portagers fell to
the Panthers on Friday night, 40-0.
Last season, Frankfort got the best of Onekama on the final game of the
regular season, and in the first round of the playoffs. But, after
back-to-back trips to the playoffs, the Portagers’ season ended at home
on Friday night.
Frankfort scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, both coming off of
blocked punts, to take a 13-0 lead. They added another score in the
second quarter for a 20-0 lead at halftime before tacking 20 more points
on the board in the second half.
“As bad as the score looks, I don’t think it reflects the effort our
kids gave,” said Onekama coach Jim Hunter. “They made Frankfort work.” |
Unfortunately the Onekama (3-6)
offense couldn’t move the ball against the sixth-ranked Panthers (8-1).
The Portagers had just 46 yards of total offense, compared to
Frankfort’s 325.
“Their defense did a good job of throttling our offense,” Hunter said.
“We made it a lot harder on ourselves because we couldn’t move the
ball.” However, Hunter said he was pleased in the way his defense
hung in, especially since the pair of blocked punts gave Frankfort good
field position early in the game. “I think we played well
defensively,” Hunter said.
Tyler Fogarty led the Portagers with eight tackles, Jared Miller had
seven, while Tom Koon had six tackles and a fumble recovery.
“For this year, I was pleased with the way the kids battled,” Hunter
said. |
