On Friday night, the Onekama High School football team found out the hard way that Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart is as good as its reputation. The third-ranked Irish (8-0) built a 47-0 lead in the first half en route to a 47-20 win over the Portagers (3-5).

“They’re a very good football team,” Onekama coach Jim Hunter said of the Irish. “They have no real weaknesses.” “They had us on our heels with the passing game,” Hunter said. “That’s the fastest team we’ve seen all year.”

The Portagers got on the scoreboard with a 70-yard touchdown run by quarterback Dan Gillespie to make it 47-6 in the second quarter. Gillespie finished the game 3-9 passing for 68 yards.

After a scoreless third quarter, Gillespie scored on a 1-yard touchdown run while Vinnie Rebiero kicked the extra-point to make it 47-13 with 4:54 left in the fourth quarter.

On the Portagers’s final possession, Tyler Fogarty scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with just six seconds left on the clock. The score was set up by a 24-yard pass from Tom Koon to Ryan Miller.  Onekama tallied 280 yards of total offense, with 188 coming on 47 carries.

Jake Matthews had 16 carries for 48 yards while Fogarty had 13 carries for 60 yards. Luke Fogarty had two receptions for 34 yards while Adrian Norman had one catch for 34 yards.

“Getting 280 yards of offense wasn’t a bad outing,” Hunter said. “I was proud of the way our kids hung in there and battled."
