harriers take first in
league jamboree

Staff Report — The
Bear Lake High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both took
first place in a West Michigan D League Jamboree.
The Laker girls’ finished with a perfect score of 15, MCE had 49 points
and Walkerville didn’t have enough runners to complete a score. The
Laker boys’ finished with 17 points, Mason County Eastern had 45 points
and Walkerville posted an incomplete score.
Although Wednesday’s meet ended up being an easy win for the Lakers,
there are more challenging events in the near future. Bear Lake will
compete in the Carson City Invitational on Saturday and at the Portage
Invitational the following Saturday.
“That will give us a nice measuring stick on where we need to be
compared to our competition,” Ross said. |
The Bear Lake girls took the top six
spots in the race and Laker freshman Jaylee Brown took first place
overall with a time of 20:17. Also racing for the Bear Lake girls were
Tobi Schoedel (2nd, 21:24), Taylor Hagen (3rd, 22:34), Shelby Sidor
(4th, 22:38), Elizabeth Schoedel (5th, 22:42), Anna Veverica (6th,
22:54), Katie Alkire (8th, 23:05), Yumi Babinec (11th, 24:17), Brenna
Miller (12th, 24:23) and Danielle Ward (13th, 25:02).
The Bear Lake boys claimed eight of
the top 10 spots, with Chuck Schoedel taking first in 17:19. Also racing
for the Laker boys were Jaron Llewellyn (2nd, 17:59), Ryan Pienta (3rd,
18:03, John Evans (5th, 18:25), Tyler Groenwald (6th, 18:37), Cody Graf
(7th, 18:39), Dan Brown (9th, 18:46), Josh Goins (10th, 18:59), Lewis
Bartlett (11th, 19:25), Ian Smith (14th, 19:50), Laust Merryld (15th,
20:22). Alex Ringel (16th, 20:25), Patrick Spalding (21:13), Steven
Verrett (19th, 21:34). Weston Brooks (23rd, 22:34), Kyle Nettler (25th,
23:34), Braden Bowling (26th, 24:12) and Roger Mullett (24:24).
“All the kids ran really well,”
said Bear Lake coach Eric Ross. “It was a good meet.”
