SCOTTVILLE — The Bear Lake High School boys’ and girls’
cross country teams both took first place in the Division 4 race at the
Ludington Invitational on Saturday at West Shore Community College.
The Laker boys took first place with 22 points as all seven runners
medaled, while Suttons Bay took second with 48 points. The Bear Lake
girls also took first place as all seven runners took home medals en
route to an easy win. Bear Lake, which co-ops with Onekama, had 17
points while Suttons Bay was second with 43 points.
“It was a good meet,” said Bear Lake coach Eric Ross. “They like these
big meets where they run against a big field.”
In the six-school Division 3 race, the Manistee High School girls took
second place while the boys finished fourth. The Chippewa girls tallied
76 points, behind first-place Benzie (17) and ahead of third-place
Oakridge (92). The MHS boys finished with 97 points, behind Benzie (27),
Mason County Central (33) and Shelby (91).
“The rain and mud obviously made
racing conditions difficult,” said MHS coach Eric Thuemmel. “I’m not
real happy with how the boys raced as a team today, but we haven’t been
at 100 percent this week. The first full week of school and some tough
mid-week practices have taken their toll on our kids. Josh Janowiak
raced well, but the rest of the guys weren’t where they should be today.
We need to get tougher.” |
Racing for the MHS boys were
Janowiak (16th, 19:22.05), Caleb Bailey (21st, 20:15:06), Seth Schneider
(23rd, 20:28:06), Adam Two Stars (25th 21:31:03), Corey Ernst (32nd,
24:35:02), Alec Bigalke (33rd, 24:54:02) and Brian Fisk (34rd,
24:58:05).
Running for the MHS girls were Kelly Schubert (7th, 23:11:00), Ashley
Tiefenthal (10th, 23:38:00), Katie Bramble (15th, 24:56:00), Nathalie
Kenny (21st, 26:08:00), Hannah Davis (23rd, 26:10:00), Erin Crothers
(31st, 27:20:00) and Hannah Sartor (32nd, 27:36:00).
“The injury bug has been wreaking havoc on our girls,” Thuemmel said.
“We had four girls out with sprains and torn ligaments today, and Katie
Bramble gutted it out with a bad knee. Kelly Schubert and Ashley
Tiefenthal stepped it up for us. After all that we’ve been through this
past week, it was nice to get a runner-up trophy for the girls. I’m
hoping we just use the next few days to recuperate and get healthy.”
Running for Bear Lake were Jaron Llewellyn (18:13), Chuck Schoedel
(18:28), Tyler Groenwald (18:57), Ryan Pienta (19:16), Cody Graf
