by the Manistee News Advocate: The Bear Lake and Manistee High
School cross country teams got a glimpse of some of the best competition
in the state at the Portage Invitational on Saturday.
In the Division 4 race, the Bear Lake boys placed sixth out of 27 teams,
while the girls finished seventh out of 19 teams. In the Division 3
race, the Chippewa girls placed 19th out of 29 teams, while the boys
placed 21st out of 28 teams.
“It was a great event,” said Bear Lake coach Eric Ross. “The kids love
that race and it was a good day.”
Hesperia won the Division 4 girls’ race while Potterville won the
Division 4 boys’ race. Hillsdale won the Division 3 boys’ race while
Jackson Lumen Christi won the Division 3 girls’ race. |
Bear Lake freshman Jaylee Brown was
the highest placing local runner by finishing seventh in 20:39 — the
fourth fastest time of all freshmen in the race. Also running for
the Bear Lake girls were Tobi Schoedel (18th, 21:21), Shelby Sidor
(51st, 22:34), Anna Veverica (53rd, 22:43), Elizabeth Schoedel (56th,
22:47), Katie Alkire (62nd, 23:09) and Taylor Hagen (82nd, 23:54).
Running in the girls’ Division 4 junior varsity race for Bear Lake wre
Danielle Ward (22nd, 23:08), Yumi Babinec (38th, 23:41) and Emily
Pomeroy (42nd, 24:24).
Jaron Llewellyn was the top finisher for the Lakers boys’ with a 15th
place in 17:07 Also running for the Laker boys were Chuck Schoedel
(16th, 17:10), Tyler Groenwald (39th, 17:48), Cody Graf (58th, 18:15),
Ryan Pienta (61st, 18:17), John Evans (69th, 18:30), Josh Goins
(18:32). In the Division 4 boys’ junior varsity race, Bear Lake’s
Lewis Bartlett finished second overall with a time of 18:42, along with
teammates Alex Ringel (5th, 19:03), Dan Brown (7th, 19:09), Weston
Brooks (13th, 19:24), Ian Smith (18th, 19:30), Laust Merryld (26th,
19:56), Patrick Spalding (33rd, 20:19), Steven Verrett (42nd, 20:44),
Kyle Nettler (49th, 20:57), Braden Bowling (63rd, 23:08), Justin Brown
(66th, 23;16) and Roger Mullet (69th, 23:46). |
