Bear Lake Teams Advance
to State Finals

Benzonia — From the Manistee News Advocate The Bear Lake High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams qualified for the state finals courtesy of strong showings in the regional meet at Benzie Central on Saturday.

The Laker boys barely missed taking first place in the Division 4 regional and ended up in second place with 50 points, just two behind first place Traverse City St. Francis. The Bear Lake girls finished in third place with 83 points, behind first-place Manton (24) and runner-up Traverse City St. Francis (72).

Both Bear Lake teams, which co-op with Onekama, will run in the state finals at the Michigan International Speedway on Nov. 1

The Manistee High School cross country team, which competed in the Division 3 regional race at Benzie, had its season ended. The Chippewa girls’ team took seventh with 181 points, while the boys finished 10th with 276 points. Benzie took first place in both races.

Bear Lake’s Chuck Schoedel (third, 17:11.2) and Jaron Llewellyn (fourth, 17:15), were the top finishers for the Laker boys, while Jaylee Brown took second overall in 20:02.3 to lead the Laker girls.
