Dear Parents, Hello! My name is Nikki Torrey and I will be your student’s High School English Teacher. I am excited to be in Onekama and look forward to getting to know the students and parents. I have planned a full year and will be teaching to the Standards and Benchmarks for the State of Michigan. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and tell you my expectations for the year. First, I will require paper, pencil, notebook and textbook to be brought to class each day. Some of these can be stored in the classroom and I encourage your student to do so. If you have any concerns about this please let me know. Along with these items each student will have a cumulative folder located in the classroom. This folder will hold finished pieces of writing. We will continuously revise each of these pieces of writing throughout the year. Each student will also be given and additional folder to store in the classroom. They may use this for class assignments as they wish. I will also use these folders to check progress on assignments and collect class notes. My class rules are easy. I require all students to be respectful, honest, and responsible. I ask they do not violate the rights of another individual. I want all students prepared for each class when the tardy bell rings. Homework will be due at the time required. Late assignments will be deducted two points for the first two days it is late. After that an assignment will receive no credit. I will follow all rules for absences and tardies as listed in the school handbook. Due to our newly renovated classrooms students will be permitted to only have water. Other food and beverages are not allowed. I will be available to help students before school, during prep time, seminar, and after school. Please encourage your child to ask for assistance if it is needed. All parents can view grades for every class at Onekama on a regular basis. Call the Student Services Office and they will provide an access code for you to do so. Also, every Friday, I will send home a progress report for you to examine.
