December at Holton vs. Holton, Muskegon Orchard View, Morley Stanwood, Freemont, Montague and Shelby | In our first time out we headed down to Holton High school for their tournament. The schools there were, Manistee, Holton, Muskegon Orchard View, Morley Stanwood, Freemont, Montague and Shelby. Shelby was very tough. They have a very good team. Since this was a team event you had to have only one loss in order to get a medal. We did very well against Montague and Orchard View losing only by 13 to Montague and 12 to Orchard View. The matches against Shelby and Morley Stanwood were somewhat further apart on scores. We watched Holton and Shelby go at it for awhile. They were playing for the team championship. Both of those teams have state qualifiers and it shows in the scores that day. Travis McKenney ended up 2-3 for the day and Nathan Morrill was 3-2. Jon Peterson had to wrestle one of his own teammates in the X-team match and lost after putting up a hard effort. Manistee posted its first team win against the X-team. December News |
December vs. Mason County Central and Ludington |
Next on the list was a dual meet
consisting of Mason County Central and Ludington. Jordan Deldos won
both of his matches improving his record to 6-1 on the day. Travis
McKenney gained more mat time, but fell twice. Looking at his
wrestling style, he needs only a little bit more experience to see
the tide turn in his favor. Being the new kid on the block and going
up against those with a few years experience can be a little
discouraging, but he just keeps going. It will pay off down the road
as I have seen this with others. Nathan Morrill went 1-1 on
the day. Raul Torres had an exhibition match and pinned his opponent
in 1 minute. We lost to Mason C.C. by 29 and to Ludington by a
score of 42-36. One extra open on our side gave them the victory. We
had more pins then they did and if it had come down to that we would
have had our second win.

December 8 at Scottville vs. Shelby, Traverse City St. Francis, Allendale, and Benzie Central |
This past weekend we traveled to
Scottville for the 35th Scottville Optimist Harold
Merrill Memorial Tourney. Teams were from Shelby, Traverse City St.
Francis, Manistee, Allendale, and Benzie Central. Our wrestlers from
Bear Lake and Onekama did great. Jordan Deldos took on a state
qualifier from TCSF in the championship and finished with a silver
medal. Travis McKenney earned his first medal by placing
fourth. Nathan Morrill went 1-2 losing to the potential champion and
3rd place finisher. Other wrestlers from Manistee also
gathered up medals- Caleb Bailey-4th, Mac Schwandt-2nd,
Bart Coyle-3rd, Chucky Barron-4th . We have
quite a lot of new wrestlers on the team this year. In the past
week alone, we have added 5 more wrestlers!

12-15-07 Quad at home vs. Ludington plus two other TBA |
Hey if anyone is still interested in some great conditioning, wrestling is still open to all until February 1st. |
at Farwell Inv. 10am | The wrestlers headed down to Farwell this past weekend to attend a 12 team tournament. Our wrestlers took to the mat and posted 3 team victories in a row. We then came up against a very good Kingsley team, and fell short to them. We then took on Elk Rapids looking to place in the top 3 teams for the day. We fell short to them. Our wrestlers really did a fine job on the day. Travis McKinney posted a win, along with Nathan Morrill who went 3-2 on a controversial score which didn't fall in his favor. Jordan Deldos from Bear Lake went 3-2. He wrestled his last match later finding out he had injured his ribs. A week off from competition will bring him back 100%. Raul Torres pinned his opponent in just .15 seconds putting him in second place for the fastest pin on the team. The co op team finished 4th on the day. Not too bad for a team of 28 wrestlers and only 5 to 6 who actually have "mat time experience". |
12/19/07 at Shelby 6pm |
Wednesday saw us traveling to Shelby
to take on two other schools. We didn't wrestle Shelby but went up
against Holton and Mason County Central. We fell short on both matches
but had excellent performances from our wrestlers. Our team is gaining
allot of experience wrestling teams that are comprised of veteran
wrestlers. The average team we wrestle have younger wrestlers but the
ones they put on the mat are juniors and seniors. This is great for us.
There is an ole saying in wrestling: "You only get better by wrestling
better". Our team is getting plenty of that. To give you a little idea
of our team, Nathan Morrill, Mac Schwandt, Bart Coyle, Jon Peterson and
A. J. Krusinak are our seniors. Four of them have wrestled through high
school. After that we have about 8-9 juniors, 5 sophomores and the rest
are freshman. A young team with a great future. And don't forget in mid January the "Middle School" wrestling program begins. This is for 7th and 8th grade students. Hope to see quite a few from Onekama and Bear Lake join in. Well that's it for now |
1/05/08 Frankfort Inv. 10 am-away |
Well the wrestling team took right off into the New Year by
heading up to Frankfort for the Frankfort Invitational. Our
wrestlers did very well. Through out the day, our wrestlers saw at
least two opponents. Travis McKenney saw action right off the bat
facing a very tough opponent, his day didn’t get any better with a
wrestler from Kingsley who had defeated him before. Travis wrestled
hard but fell 0-2 for the day. Jon Peterson had two matches against
his former school. Jon finished the day 0-2. A reversal on one match
prevented him from moving into the medal round. Raul Torres took to
the mat pinning his first opponent, but coming up short on the next
match. He then went into his third match pinning his opponent in a
minute and a half. Raul then went into his final match pinning his
opponent and securing a 3rd place medal. Nathan Morrill
had a fine day going two for four. In one match it came down to the
wire as all he needed was back points to secure the victory which
would have put him into the championship match. Nate did earn a 4th
place medal. In all the wrestlers had a very fine day with Bart
Coyle securing a 2nd place finish and Mac Schwandt and Caleb Bailey
each took 1st place in their weight divisions. Manistee
placed 5 out of 12 teams
