Portager
Boys & Girls both take seventh place at Manton Invitational

May 9, 2008

Friday evening the track teams competed in the Manton Invitational.   Once again the Manton Rangers proved their dominance, winning the meet with 139 points.  Onekama Girls finished in 7th place with 28.6 points. The team score doesn’t show the tremendous effort the girls put into their events.  We are struggling with some injuries and trying to work around all the extra spring activities going on.  I am overjoyed at all their efforts.  We were juggling athletes around and into events that were outside many of their comfort zones.  We are seeing improvements across the board, even with the unfavorable weather conditions.  This is promising for the athletes with their focus being on the WMD conference and the Regional meet held this week.

Bringing home medals for the lady Portagers were:

  • 1600M Relay: Stacey Keith, Anna Veverica, Yumi Babinec, Shelby Sidor 1st 4:29.5

  • 800M Co-Ed Relay:  Yumi Babinec, Stacey Keith, Parker Johnson, Eric Maddox 1st place 1:46

  • 800M Run:  Anna Veverica 4th place 2:40.6

  • 400M Relay:  Alyssa Cole, Yumi Babinec, Courtney Swisher, Stacey Keith 5th 57.0

  • High Jump:  Alyssa Cole and Stacey Keith tie 6th place 4’6”

“There was some great competition at this meet, and I was very pleased with the results,” noted Coach Mickey Story. “Our athletes had many personal bests, including those athletes who did not place in the top six in their events. One of those was freshman Bobby Myers, who improved his 3200meter run time by over 40 seconds to finish in 11:58.”

Other personal bests included Jaron Llewellyn, who placed third in the 1600 meter run with a PR of 4:45.9; Chuck Schoedel, placing third in the 3200m run with a season’s best 10:41.1, and Parker Johnson, who vaulted to a PR of 12’6” in the pole vault for third place. Manton’s meet featured several coed relay events. The Portager coed 800 meter relay team of Maddux, Parker Johnson, Yumi Babinec and Stacey Keith earned second place with their time of 1:46.08, while the 3200m coed relay team (John Evans, Ryan Pienta, Katie Alkire and Anna Veverica) took fifth in 10:10.31.
