Ten Portagers Qualify for the State Meet

Results of Division IV regional meet at Frankfort -  May 17, 2008

Six boys from the Onekama Portager track team qualified for the 2008 state track meet during regional competition held at Frankfort High School on Saturday, May 17th.

The boys’ 3200 meter relay team of Jordan Maxey, John Evans, Jaron Llewellyn and Chuck Schoedel took third place with their state-qualifying time of 8:33.90. “The team shaved 24 seconds off their best time in this event with their efforts in this race,” Coach Mickey Story noted. “It was an incredible race for them; they did a fantastic job.”   

Schoedel also placed second in the 3200 meter run with his time of 10:25.96, earning a berth at the state meet, while Parker Johnson’s 12’0” vault in the pole vault was good enough for third place as well as qualifying him for state. 

Senior Nick Bradford capped off a fine track career by placing second in the high jump at 5’11”. Bradford, who placed eighth overall in last year’s state high jump competition, will return to the state meet once again.  

Fifteen schools participated in the Division IV regionals, with the Manton Rangers emerging victorious with 152 points. Traverse City St. Francis placed second (138.50 pts), followed by Lake City (103), McBain (77.50), Frankfort (47), Onekama (39), Marion (29), Mesick (29), Northern Michigan Christian (13..50), Buckley (13), Brethren (11), Forest Area (9), Glen Lake (1.50), Grand Traverse Academy , and Traverse City Christian.

Saturday’s regional meet featured many athletes who posted personal records for the season in their individual events. They included Justin Zupin in the 1600 meter run (5:15.8), Michael Bobian in the 400 meter run (59.67), Ryan Pienta in the 800 meter run (2:11.7), Troy Rau in the 200 meter dash (25.9), and Raul Torres in the shot put (33’01”).

Other athletes who competed at the regional meet included:

  • 110 high hurdles: Lewis Bartlett, 20.88

  • 400m run: John Evans, 57.99

  • 300m intermediate hurdles: Lewis Bartlett, 53.20

  • 3200m run: Bobby Myers, 12:02

  • Pole Vault: Danny Brown, 9’0”

  • Discus: Raul Torres, 79’09”

The Division IV state track & field meet will be held on Saturday, May 31 at Forest Hills Eastern High School in Grand Rapids. 

Four lady Portagers will be heading to the state finals Saturday, May 31st.  The 1600M Relay team just missed a first place finish by a mere 4 tenths of a second behind TCSF.  Stacey Keith, Yumi Babinec, Shelby Sidor and Anna Veverica all ran personal best times, improving their seasons best by 10 seconds.  Many of the girls focused on 1 or 2 events and it paid off.  With fresh legs we had many personal records.
