Not only was there a
competitive field of 11 teams, but the cold, windy weather proved to be
a formidable competitor as well for the Onekama/Bear Lake boys' at the
annual Mesick Bulldog Invitational held on Sat., April 26th.
Yet the Portagers were able to fend off both to take home the second
place trophy behind a strong Manton team, who finished in first place
with 174 points. Onekama scored 70 points, followed by Mesick in third
with 68 points, and Frankfort in fourth place with 65 points.
“The closeness of
the score – just five points between second and fourth place – reflects
the fact that every athlete’s contribution is important,” noted Coach
Mickey Story. “It was a miserable day in terms of temperature and wind,
which affected times and distances in all events. No personal records
were set, but I was very proud of the effort of all of the athletes.”
Second places were
recorded by two Portager relay teams. The 3200 meter relay squad of
Jaron Llewellyn, Chuck Schoedel, Dan Brown and John Evans had a time of
9:22, while the 400 meter relay team – Jordan Maxey, Eric Maddux, Parker
Johnson and Joerdan Daldos – placed with 48.2 Schoedel’s time of 11”07
in the 3200 meter run also earned him a second place in that event.
Placing third were
Portager athletes Nick Bradford in the high jump (5’06”), Maxey in the
110 high hurdles (17.20), and Llewellyn in both the 1600 (5:10) and
3200m runs.
In the fourth place
positions were Bradford in the discus (113’06”), Schoedel in the 1600
meter run (5:18), the 800 meter relay team of Maddux, Evans, Johnson and
Ryan Pienta (1:42.9), and the 1600 meter relay team of Maxey, Evans,
Llewellyn and Pienta.
Fifth place finishes
included Lewis Bartlett in the 110 high hurdles (23.90). Evans in the
400 meter run (60.5), and Justin Zupin in the 3200 meter run.(11:58).
Other places
recorded were freshman Raul Torres, 13th place, shot put and
discus; freshman Bobby Myers, 15th place in the 200 meter
run; Michael Bobian, ninth place in the 200, and Ian Smith, 13th
place in the 800 meter run. |
