The Lady Portagers gave there all, but it wasn’t enough to beat a tough Cardinal team Wednesday at Custer, 168 - 147. Weather conditions were near perfect for the afternoon meet.   (*Personal Records)

Portager Boys win WMD Jamboree

The Onekama/Bear Lake  boys’ track team scored 168 points to win the WMD Jamboree held at Mason County Eastern on Wednesday, April 30th.  Mason County Eastern (MCE) took second with 153 points, followed by Brethren (71), Big Rapids Crossroads (49), Baldwin (32) and Pentwater (14).

Two Portager relay teams scored first, winning the 400 meter relay (Eric Maddux, Jordan Maxey, Joerdan Daldos and Parker Johnson in 47.3) and the 1600 meter relay (Maxey, John Evans, Jaron Llewellyn and Ryan Pienta in 3:49)

First place finishers included Llewellyn in the 1600 meter run (5:00), Chuck Schoedel in the 3200 meter run (11:09) Nick Bradford in the high jump (5’10”) and Johnson in the pole vault (11’6”). 

Second places were recorded by Anthony Reedy in both the discus (130’8”) and the high jump (5’8”), Danny Brown in the pole vault (9’6”), Llewellyn in the 800 meter run (2:15), Schoedel in the 1600 meter run (5:05), and Maxey in both the 110 high hurdles (16.8) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (45.4).   Portager relay teams placed second in the 800 meter relay (Daldos, Evans, Pienta and Troy Rau, 1:43.7) and the 3200 meter relay (Llewellyn, Schoedel, Brown and Evans, 9:05).  

Nick Bradford took third in the discus (126’1”), 110 high hurdles (19.4) and 300 intermediate hurdles (47.5), while Johnson was third in the 200 meter run (24.8).

Finishing fourth was Justin Zupin in the 3200 meter run (12:15), while fifth places were recorded by Reedy in the shot put (35’7”), Maddux in the 100 meter dash (11.7), and Pienta in the 800 meter run (2:22).

Earning sixth place for their efforts were Raul Torres in the discus (87’6”), Evans in the 400 meter run (57.1) and Zupin in the 1600 meter run. (5:28).

“It was a great team effort,” noted boys’ coach Mickey Story. “The kids were disappointed with their results at last week’s Jamboree, and through hard work and effort by the entire team, they made a 45 point improvement over last week’s scores.”
