J. V. FOOTBALL WINS A THRILLER OVER VESTABURG!

In a thrilling, memorable football game, the Onekama/Bear Lake Junior Varsity team defeated the Vestaburg Wolverines by a score of 8 to 7.  The game was decided on a fourth down field goal attempt by Vestaburg from the Portager one yard line with one second left on the clock!  The hard charging Portager defense was able to break through the Wolverine line allowing Luke Fogarty to block the attempted kick and send the home town fans into a frenzy!

The game featured two hard hitting defenses that resulted in a scoreless first half. Vestaburg scored the first points of the day in the third quarter and connected on the extra point kick to make the score 7 to nothing for the Wolverines.  The Portagers reached the end zone in the fourth quarter when Brenner Johnson hauled in a pass from Thomas Koon and scampered 30 yards for the touchdown.  On the two-point play, Koon lofted a pass that was caught by Luke Fogarty to make the score 8 to 7.

The two teams then exchanged possessions before Vestaburg mounted the last drive of the game all the way down near the Portager goal line.

Travis Teachout, Jake Matthews and Brenner Johnson had big plays for the Portager offense, while Chase Calloway and Jared Miller lead the Portager defense.

“We are so proud of our players for hanging in there all game and playing their hearts out. This was a team win, with every player making a contribution in some way.  To pull out a win like this over such a quality program like Vestaburg was just amazing!  These young men worked extremely hard preparing for this game and it certainly paid off for them.”
