Marion Onekama loses after a tough fight Game Report and Photos

Bear Lake The varsity lost its league opener to Bear Lake on Friday night 82-56 in a game that featured 56 fouls.  The Portagers fell behind early but cut Bear Lake's lead to 9, 58-49, with five minutes remaining in the game.  But foul problems and poor free throw shooting doomed Onekama as Bear Lake was able to hold off the resilient Portagers.  Nick Bradford scored 22 points before fouling out.  Hunter Slade had 11 points, Ryan Miller scored 6, and Zac Gilbert added 5.  The Portagers (0-2, 0-1) face Brethren at home in a pivotal conference match up Monday night. ~Lucas Balmer reporting

MCE Onekama Wins! The Portager varsity won a pivotal conference contest against Mason County Eastern on Monday evening, 80-77, in exciting fashion.  Playing in a hostile environment, the Portagers (6-3, 6-2) held off a game Cardinals squad with gutsy free throw shooting and solid defense.  Ryan Miller picked up a double-double, recording 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Nick Bradford led OHS in scoring with 27 points.  Hunter Slade and Levi Capper both chipped in with 13.  Big Rapids Crossroads is next on the schedule for the Portagers.  ~Coach Balmer

Big Rapids Crossroads Onekama Wins! The varsity won its fifth straight contest Thursday evening, defeating Big Rapids Crossroads by a score of 66-50.  Nick Bradford led the Portager offense with 26 points, followed by Ryan Miller with 17.  OHS (7-3, 7-2) hosts Bear Lake on Tuesday in a game that could determine the conference champion.  Photos of JV and Varsity

Brethren Onekama Wins! The Portager varsity came out flat and had to overcome a 26-16 halftime deficit to defeat Brethren on Friday night, 70-47.  Levi Capper had 19 points to lead OHS, followed by Nick Bradford with 18.  Jim Kosiboski and Ryan Miller each contributed 8 rebounds and 10 points.  Onekama (8-4, 8-3) welcomes Walkerville this Monday. ....Coach Balmer

Walkerville Onekama Wins! The Onekama varsity rolled Walkerville on Monday by a score of 84-54.  The game was never in doubt, as the Portagers jumped ahead to take a 41-26 halftime lead.  Jim Kosiboski had a monster game with 17 rebounds and 23 points.  Nick Bradford finished with 12 rebounds to go along with 18 points.  Levi Capper scored 16, Ryan Miller added 12 points and 12 rebounds, Lucas Porter 6 points, Zac Gilbert 4 points and Justin Zupin scored 3 points.  OHS (9-4, 9-3) is at Baldwin Thursday evening. ~Coach Balmer

Baldwin The Portager varsity could not overcome a sluggish first half against Baldwin, losing to the Panthers 83-72 despite a great effort in the final two periods.  Nick Bradford grabbed 14 rebounds and scored 27 points to pace Onekama, followed by Levi Capper's 23 points.  Jim Kosiboski added 5 assists.  OHS next welcomes M-22 rival Frankfort.  ~Luke Balmer

Game Photos & Report.  For the second consecutive game the OHS varsity found itself in a deficit it could not overcome, losing to Frankfort 73-60.  The Portagers trailed by as many as 25 before rallying to cut the lead to single digits late in the game.  OHS could not complete the comeback and dropped its second straight game.  The Portagers hope to rebound when they resume league play Friday night at Pentwater. ~Luke Balmer

Pentwater Onekama Wins! The OHS varsity showed grit and determination as they stormed back from 5 points down in the final minutes to down Pentwater 78-75. Nick Bradford had 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jim  Kosiboski came up with 19 points. Jim's brother Joe moved up from the JV and scored 11 points and had 9 rebounds. Mesick Onekama loses to Mesick 62-65  Game Photos The varsity lost a disappointing contest to Mesick, 62-65, despite coming back from a double-figure deficit late in the fourth quarter and having
opportunities to send the game into overtime.  Nick Bradford led all scorers
with 21 points, followed by Levi Capper with 13 and Jim Kosiboski with 11. 
Next up for the Portagers (10-7, 10-4) is Mason County Eastern.

MCE Onekama Wins! The Portager varsity won 71-68 to make it a season sweep of Mason County Eastern, downing the Cardinals for the second time this year.  Nick Bradford was an offensive force, scoring a game-high 29 points.  Jim Kosiboski chipped in with 12.  OHS (11-7, 11-4) makes the short trip south to face Manistee Catholic in an unusual Saturday night contest.
  MCC Onekama loses 67-48 After handling Manistee Catholic earlier in the season, the Portagers found themselves with their hands full Saturday night against the Sabres, losing by a score of 48-67.  Nick Bradford paced the Portager offense with 20
points, while Ryan Miller contributed with 10.  OHS (11-8, 11-5) hopes to end the regular season on a positive note when they travel to Lake Leelanau St. Mary's Tuesday night.

Lake Leelanau St. Mary Onekama's varsity came up short against Lake Leelanau St. Mary's in the final regular season contest, losing 70-76.  Nick Bradford scored 21 points to lead the Portagers, followed by Jim Kosiboski with 18 and Ryan Miller with 16.  OHS (11-9, 11-5) tackles Cadillac Heritage in the opening game of districts Monday evening at 6:00PM. ~Coach Balmer

Feb.29 District Finals Onekama vs. Bear Lake at Frankfort The Onekama varsity showed grit and determination in Friday night's district championship game in Frankfort, but they came up just short, losing to Bear Lake by a score of 58-68.  It was a disappointing defeat, but the Portager faithful couldn't be prouder of the passion and effort displayed by the team.
