Wrestling News for February

The end of the wrestling season has come. At districts both Zack Fix and Nathan Morrill wrestled hard but did not have enough wins to advance to Regional. Only two wrestlers on the Frankfort team advanced: Mike Cole and Van Amond.

Zack Fix wrestled hard all season. He overcame a shoulder injury that would have sidelined most wrestlers. Zack's greatest achievement on the mat this year was not all of his wins. His goal was to last 3 rounds. You see, due to asthma attacks, there were times when even ahead Zack had to forfeit his match because he couldn't continue. Unable to breathe properly force this type of action. In his last few matches, due to hard conditioning he achieved his goal. In his words: "I did what I set out to do to is year-last three rounds." Even in some of the matches he didn't win, you could see the pride from just achieving this. This was Zack's final year of wrestling and by far was not a disappointing one. His comical antics will be long remembered.

Also, anyone interested in USA Federation Freestyle Wrestling should contact the MRA office at 723-9274. This is open to girls and boys from I- Adult age.  This year, from what I have heard we will have a meet in Manistee, Benzie and 4 more in the Grand Rapids area. See you there.
Nathan Morrill, only a junior this year, ran into a buzz saw at districts. Several wrestlers in the 125lb class didn't make weight and were put into his weight class. Some of them were state qualifiers from last year at 125. It was the toughest bracket of the day. Never giving up and wrestling hard, he fell short on his match. He has worked hard all year, as the rest of the team has. They never let down, not once.
Many times the team knew they couldn't win a meet because of the shortage of wrestlers. At team districts our hopes were high, but found out that we had two more weight classes open up on us. A badly injured knee on one wrestler and a broken hand on another shorten us severely.  We fell short by 6 pts to Forest Area. They took on Kingsley, with Kingsley winning and advancing to Regional. One highlight of the year was at the bridge brawl in Rudyard, the coach of the Rudyard team said: "Man, If you guys had a full team, we would have been in big trouble." All Frankfort wrestlers pinned their Rudyard opponents that day. That pretty much has been the story all year. But next year is a new season and hopefully we will be able to fill some of those spots.
This year we lose to graduation Zack Fix and Mike Cole. That will add and open up 6-7 weight classes next year. We will have our work cut out for us.
