Wrestling News for December

Paul Morrill

Well, the Frankfort/Onekama wrestling team started competition on Dec 9th traveling to Manton. There were teams from Kingsley, Cadillac, Holton,  Hart, Charlevoix, Elk Rapids, Coopersville and Manton. Competition was rough. Most of these teams already had 6 to 8 matches under their belt.

We then traveled to Benzie Central to meet up with Kingsley/Benzie. Kingsley was a strong team as expected. Against Benzie Central, Nathan Morrill posted a win.

After that it was a long road trip on December 15th to Rudyard and the Bridge Brawl. Nathan Morrill posted a pin in .40 seconds. Due to too many weight classes open, Frankfort’s only chance for a team win was nullified by forfeits. They had 5 wrestlers go up against Rudyard and all five won. The U. P. definitely has some very good wrestlers. Next year the districts will be re-divided as the U. P. will come down for tournaments. As it stands now, the U. P. has their own state championship matches. Frankfort’s wrestlers have been doing quite well according to Coach Pettit. We started off a little slow, but with hard conditioning and drills, we expect to see some really good results. Tommy Johnson, Sam Fitzhugh and Mike Cole are all posting winning records so far. We are looking forward to having Zack Fix return as our 285 lb wrestler. He has been hampered with a shoulder injury, and felt a couple of weeks off would help.

The wrestling team would like everyone to know that if you’re interested in wrestling, you have up to the 15th of January to join.  This is a great conditioning tool for those wanting to stay in shape for the next season. I have seen teams show up, one in particular is Kingsley. All but one wrestler has a football jersey on. Many football players who don’t play basketball or some other sport, go right into wrestling. The close contact sharpens their skills in both discipline and reaction skills. There are also teams out there with females on the team. It’s just not a “guys” sport. Some of these ladies are very good. They go straight from competition to their own state meet each year.

If you are interested in wrestling, just contact one of the wrestlers in school or give asst. coach Paul Morrill a call at 398-9024. We practice Monday-Friday 4:30-6pm.  I do know that we are very much in need of wrestlers. Our numbers are low this year. We lost 3 to injuries due to the football season. I know we have open weight classes in 103,114,119,125,145,171,215. That’s a lot of points to give up each time we go into team competition. But the wrestlers we have don’t give up. They just keep on trying.-
