Girls bring home some hardware and Conference rankings
February 7, 2007 |
While looking a little cold, Monika with a K and Emily are all smiles as they sport the hardware they were just awarded. These girls along with Diamond, stepped it up another notch for the team after teammate Kelli was stricken with Mono.
Congratulations to Emily and Monika for their
Conference Medals. |
There weren't too many, if any, surprises at
the LMSC Conference
finals held at Schuss Mt. 2-7-07. Changing
mountains did not seem to
disrupt the drive and desire our team members were exhibiting all
season at Crystal Mt. In the boy's slalom event, Eric Baumeler, a former OHS co-op member now racing for Benzie won the race with a combined time of 1:04.72.The next fastest time was a full 5 seconds behind him. Brethren's Eric Somsel, racing with OHS nailed 21st place with times of :37.92 and :48.24. Donny Olson slid into 27th position with runs of :48.01 and :48.42. Two racers from other schools had the misfortune of DQ'lg in this event. Boy's Giant Slalom had Benzie's Eric Baumeler claiming the championship in this event as well with a combined time of :53.69. Eric Somsel placed 16th with :29.21 and :29.36 for a combined time of :58.57. Donny Olson nailed 26th with a first run of :33.54. Donny shaved some time off his second run, clocking in at :33.22 for a combined effort of 1:06.76. Five racers from other schools had problems on the GS course logging in DNF's or DQ's. Girl's Giant Slalom champion proved to be Manistee's Katie Bramble, a name very familiar as winner in this event all season. Emily Harwell and Monika Higley both grabbed a piece of the action,as history of the season would predict though. Emily logged in a first run of :31.73. Determined to stay in the medals, she shaved some time off, clocking :30.62 on her second run ,to place 7th. Monika Higley, racing very well, nailed the 10th place position with her times of :31.78 and :32.05. Diamond Kimpel placed 21st with her runs of :37.26 and :37.20. Kelli Waligorski did not start. Emily earned the 5th place finish in Slalom with her runs of :39.76 and :41.72. Monika placed 13th with a first run of :47.12 and a second run of :48.58. Diamond shaved off time on her second run to nail 19th. Her times were :54.31 and :53.74 respectively. Manistee's Katie Bramble won the slalom event. |
Using the World Cup point system, the racers were earning points
for their placings throughout the season. In
Boy's GS, Eric Somsel
accumulated 69.5 pts and Donny Olson 27. For slalom, Eric had 56
points and Donny Olson 23. For the
combined, Eric totaled 125.5 and
Donny 50points. If one could take out the
racers who race CUSSA, Eric
would have been in the medal mix. Fantastic racing for a first year
racer and skier! The same World Cup system was used for the girls as well, with Emily tallying 233 points in slalom for 6th position and medal. Monika ended with 145 points for 12th. Kelli Waligorski had earned 46 pts before being stricken with Mono and having to not start in the last few races. Diamond raced her way to 45 points for the event. Emily racked up 233 points for the 6th place medal in Giant Slalom, while Monika earned the 10th position and medal with 154 points.Diamond tallied 48 pts and Kelli 40. For the combined, Emily finishes the conference season with 466 points and 6th place medal. Monika hung onto the 10th place medal with 299 points. Diamond wraps up the conference races with 93 pts for 22nd place and Kelli 24th with 86pts.

Left to right, Coach Curt Mathieu, Monika Higley, Emily Harwell and Assistant Coach Kaylie Brown pose for a quick photo after the awards ceremony at the base of Schuss Mt. Coach Mathieu will take no credit for the girls' medals as he feels it was the girl's efforts and dedication that earned them. |
Diamond Kimpel took photos of this event and we thank her with all of our hearts! It's not easy keeping a camera working in such cold temperatures. |
