Emily Harwell Qualifies for the State Meet while earning  All Region Honors
Great news for the girl's team came just in time for the Regional meet held at Caberfae. Senior Kelli Waligorksi was released by her Doctor to "free" ski only. It was all they needed to be able to participate in the competition. Emily, Monika, Diamond and Kelli were once again a whole team. Still not 100%, Kelli stepped up for the team so the team could compete, knowing she must free ski only and take intentional DQ's by skiing out of the course. There would not be, nor could there be, any"racing " for Kelli today. Kelli was doing this for the other girls. One can not commend her enough for her selfless act that allowed the team to race for team standings of which they earned 11th in Slalom and a super finish of 6th in Giant Slalom and helping to send Emily to State.
Individually, the girls placed well. Emily qualified for State in Slalom with her times of :28.47 and :30.38 for a combined time of :58.85 and 12th place. Monika Higley took 35th with runs of :32.71and :36.32 for a combined of 1:09.03. Diamond Kimpel nailed 50th with :37.96 :42.13. Kelli Waligorski took an intentional DQ for the team. TC. St. Francis's Lillian Wiley won the event , becoming regional champ with her combined time of :52.26. Manistee's Katie Bramble came in 2nd with :53.38.
The girls faced an aggressive wind while racing Giant Slalom.
Coach Mathieu explained to the girls that they would have to get
"down" a little more than one would normally do for GS. Not a full tuck, but down. Emily just missed qualifying for state in Giant Slalom with her times of :35.33 and :36.24. She was just two places away and Coach Mathieu attributed that to the high winds she had to buck on course. Monika also did well placing 33rd with her runs of :37.42 and :39.47. Diamond, not giving in to her injured knee, placed  51st with :43.32 and :42.92.
Kelli once again did not finish, but started for the "team" effort
and standings. Manistee's Katie Bramble won the GS event.
So , what does all of this mean? We could sort through and pour over times and placings forever. For example, if Kelli was able to race full out, knowing her average times, the girls could have easily been knocking on Cadillac's back door and vying for 5th overall. What it all comes down to, is the fact that OHS/BL(girls)/BHS has an awful lot of talent on their team. Lack of depth of members plagues all of the teams, so when a team is stricken with illness or injury, it can be detrimental to team efforts. Our co-op has become such a tight knit group, that they are willing to do what it takes to help the individual member succeed and reach their goals, even though they themselves might not be able to.
The team has one more race which will be at Snow Snake, then it's off to the State meet to cheer on Emily as she races for State rankings in Slalom.
*Reporter's Note* Donny and Eric did not compete at Regionals as there weren't enough members for a team.
