OHS Golf Team Wins Non-Conference Match With MCC

Levi Capper shot his way to Match Medalist and team lowman at tonight's match against MCC at The Heathlands. Shooting one stroke less then team mate Parker Johnson who carded a 39, Levi turned in a 38 for his round on the back nine. Drew Griswold logged in a 42 for his round and Jake Matthews contributed to the team score with his 47. This gave OHS a team effort of 166 for the win. MCC turned in a team effort of 181 at match end. Jordan Pomeroy had a rough night, with double bogies carding a 51, Tim Veverica also struggled some turning in a 53. Todd Lyman shot 54 and Derek Rosen a 61. Zac and Donny did not finish due to darkness.
MCC's Mark Bartosz shot a 41 to be their team low man. Matt Smith, playing ill, turned in a 44, Jessie Rose a 48, Zack Smith 48 and Zach Luolamala 48. Only 2 of the 48's were needed for their team effort of 181. Other shooters for MCC were, Neil Cheeseboro who shot a 57, Jim LaPorte a 63 and Nolan Gunia who could not finish due to darkness.

Onekama returned the hospitality that MCC has always shown us, with a sloppy joe dinner after the match. Mr. and Mrs.Lyman served up sloppy joes, a vegetable and fruit tray and plenty of cookies to a very hungry group of golfers. It definitely warmed the soul after the chill of the night air had set in.
The Portagers are right there knocking on the door of that school team record. All they need is for just four of the team members to all shoot in the low 40's and high 30's at the same match to blow it open. They have several that are capable, and do shoot those low scores. Hopefully, they can put it all together for one huge team effort and nail it. Today's win now has them sitting pretty with a 17-4 record to date. Their only losses coming from matches with Brethren/Bearlake (3)and Manistee High (1).

Manager, Mike Swanson takes a rest after completing his managerial duties of assisting the foursome he walked with through their nine holes of play.

Parker Johnson literally gets down on the ground to read the line of his putt on the 15th green.  He barely missed the difficult downhill "bender" for birdie.
Jake Matthew makes a bid for birdie on the 13th green during play with Manistee Catholic.

Tim Veverica putts the ball into the cup on the eighteenth hole for bogey to complete match play.

Jordan Pomeroy appears to release his grip on the putter in disappointment that his birdie putt did not drop on the 16th hole.

Levi Capper strokes a long putt on the 17th green in anticipation of it dropping for birdie.

After the match concluded, the Portagers and the Sabers enjoyed a meal together.  Mrs. Pam Lyman helped prepare the meal which consisted of sloppy joes, potato chips, a vegetable plate, a fruit plate and cookies.

Mrs. Jenny Olson, (Donny’s Mom) assisted Mrs. Pam Lyman in preparing the meal.
