Portager's Golf Team Advances to Regionals Marking a First in School History

Levi Capper, Jake Matthews, Parker Johnson, Drew Griswold and Jordan Pomeroy represented Onekama at district competition held at the Ramshorn Golf Course in Fremont, Michigan.  The team placed fourth and qualified to advance to regional competition to be held at The Colonial Golf Course in Hart.  This team represents the first time an Onekama golf squad has advanced as a team to the next level of competition in MHSAA play.

OHS has sent Individuals on to Regionals and State competition many times since the inception of the Golf Team, however today, once again this 2006 team is setting records. For the first time in the school's history, the Portager's advance to Regionals as a team! The Portager's had to deal with mother nature first, after a severe storm flooded the Ram's Horn, causing the tournament to be played Saturday instead of  this past Thursday. Ram's Horn reported at least 6 inches of rain flooded the course that stormy night and a few days later the players reported the course still extremely wet. The golfer's actually felt the spray of water as they hit the ball and it was hard to strike the ball clearly. When courses and greens are this wet, the ball's speed is slowed dramatically and putting can even become quite a chore.
Twelve teams battled it out for the top 6 spots and the right to go onto Regionals. As individuals, they shot it out for the top 6 medals. Parker Johnson was lowman for Onekama today, shooting 89 for 18 holes. Jake Matthews sunk a 50 foot putt and carded a 91 for his 18 holes, Levi Capper brought in a 93 stroke effort and Jordan Pomeroy shot 95, giving the team a 368 for their bid to regionals.  Also shooting was Drew Griswold who turned in a score of 114.
Muskegon turned in a team effort of 360, Manistee Catholic a 362, but it was N. Muskegon who ran away with the show, with their team effort of 324 today. Onekama's bid of 368 placed them in 4th position, out of the 12 teams participating, and now advance to the
Regional competition which will be held at Colonial in Hart, 10-12-06. The Portager's have golfed this course last year for Districts, so no surprises are expected. Now, if Mother Nature will produce more sun and upper 60's like she did for today's match, it will be a great day. With just a few strokes separating 2nd through 4th team placings at today's Districts, anything could happen at Regionals! It's going to be a nail biter for sure.
Congratulations 2006 Golf Team! Keep setting and breaking those records...just awesome! Applaud your Golf team when you see them OHS! They are climbing the ranks fast!

In a recently held, county wide tournament held at the Heathlands, OHS, Manistee High, MCC and Brethren/Bear Lake let the boys shoot it out in an 18 hole match for "individual bragging rights."  Parker Johnson brought home the 7th place medal after his tie for 6th place with Brethren/Bear Lake's Patrick Spalding's 81 was broke. The officials used the 18th hole score for the tie breaker. Patrick had a bogey and Parker shot a double bogey. Other shooters for Onekama that day were Levi Capper who shot 47 and 40 for a final score of 87, Drew Griswold also with an 87 with his rounds of 46 and 41, Jake Matthews an 89 shooting 42 and 47 respectively and Todd Lyman a 107.
Manistee High's shooters took home the first four medals at this match.
