Portagers Bring Home the Win After a Two-way Tie is broken by The Fifth Man

August 30, 2006

<--The " wooden mushroom" appears to have followed Jake
to The Briar, the Mesick Bulldogs home course.

Mesick Golf Coach, Scott Phillips made the decision to use only five of his shooters when the Portagers arrived at the match short a 6th shooter. The decision may well have cost him the match win by only using 5 members, however, this evenly matched the teams in shooter numbers. Coach Zadow explained Briar as a " tighter course , calling for ball placement." She went on to say that," the team's shot making ability was put to the test today."
Mesick and Onekama finished in a tie , with the 4 scorers tallying 191 for both teams. When this happens they go to the 5th lowest scorer for each team.
MATCH MEDALIST and Lowman for OHS was Drew Griswold shooting a 41 tonight. Parker Johnson brought in a 43, while Levi ,struggling through most of the match, finished strong on the final 3 holes with a bogey, bogey, par to card a 52. Jake struggled from the start, but hung on to card a 55 wrapping up the scoring four who tallied 191.
Mesick's Lowman, Ryan Baker shot a 44, Andrew Gaylord and Dan Casselman each a 46 and Ian Richards a 55 for a team effort of 191. The next lowest scores ,or the 5th shooters, were added to each teams score to try and break the tie. OHS's Zac GIlbert shot a 56 to Mesick's Thomas Keesler's 58, giving OHS the win in this non-conference match.
This was a close one. So close that Coach Zadow commented," they won by the skin of their teeth". A win is a win and the match was played as set by the host school. However, the team and Coach Zadow commend the Mesick Coach, for it very well could have gone in their favor.
Today's win puts the team at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Conference play. The Portagers have a few days to hone their skills before the next match, which will be home, at The Heathlands , the first day of school. Start time is 4 pm . They will be going head to head with Mason County Central-(Scottville).
The team's are getting tougher, and Mason County Central should be another great test of skill. This has already been an exciting and interesting season ,we've just begun..SO, as you head back to school for the 06-07 season , be sure to congratulate your golf team that has already earned a 6-0 record.
Thank you Coach Zadow for taking photos of tonight's match in my absence.
