After a Decade of match losses against M.C.C., O.H.S. broke through the drought and secured the win today at the Manistee Country Golf Club.

The season opener for the team was an 18 hole non-conference match against MCC, a long time friendly rival. Coach Zadow stated, " Both teams showed room for improvement. This early in the season, the team that commits the fewest errors will prevail." There were some individual strengths, however, the team had 10 penalty strokes we gave away, narrowing the gap to the final score." The match ended OHS 363 to MCC's 366 giving OHS the win.
Today's match time was moved up from the afternoon start time, and the day turned out to be a perfect golf day. Overcast skies with a slight breeze,... a much nicer welcome than last year's gale force winds the teams had to contend with last year.
Drew Putted very well today, however the balls just wouldn't drop in for him. Todd was struggling today to regain his consistency, something that even the MCC Coach took notice of last year that he had. Todd did just miss a Birdie Putt leaving it short today. Drew and Parker both made some great recovery shots during the match helping to secure the win for OHS. Jordan seemed to struggle with his drives today with them pulling to the left through out the match. While the team denies being nervous for the first match of the season, some of these things might have very well been just that. This opener win not only made a great start to the season, it will also serve as a confident booster enabling the team to fine tune their skills. Working all summer long on their game without their coach, can make for a long summer, but practice and matches have officially started now, allowing them to fall under the wings of Coach Zadow and her golf nurturing ways. With their dedication and her direction there should be many more highlights to the season.
Match Medalist was Mark Bartosz of MCC with a final score of 79. Lowman for OHS was Sophomore Parker Johnson who carded an 88.
The team kept the scoring tight as a group, locking MCC out of the match win. Senior Jordan Pomeroy carded a 90, Freshman Jake Matthews brought in a 91 and Sophomore Drew Griswold scored 94 to round out the scoring four for OHS. Zac Gilbert, Sophomore, carded a 108 ,while Senior Todd Lyman scored 112.
Other team members who will be playing in the up coming matches are Senior Tim Veverica, Sophomore Levi Capper, Sophomore Donny Olson, Sophomore Derrick Rosen and Freshman Chase Callaway. Managers this year are, Mike Swanson who is returning from last year, and newcomer Paul Cunningham.
This looks to be a VERY exciting year for OHS and The Golf Team! Coach Zadow has lots of depth with players shooting in the low 40's. Come out and support our team. All home matches are held at The Heathlands. Next match for OHS is an 18 hole conference match against Walkerville on the front 9 and Freesoil on the back 9 at The Heathlands with a start time of 1 pm on Tuesday 8-22-06.
Whistles and hugs Team! Job well done! Thank you Coach Zadow for taking photos in my absence. This is our sports web at it's best!
