Onekama JV Football Wins Over the Mesick Bulldogs in Final Game of the Season

October 18, 2006

In the final game of the JV Football season the Mesick Bulldogs came to Portager Field to take on our J V Portagers in a 4:00 p.m. game with cloudy skies and a threat of rain in the air.

For almost the first 2 quarters it was a very strong defense battle between the 2 teams. With 35 seconds left before halftime Joe Kosiboski took a hand off from quarterback Dan Gillespie and scampered through the Bulldogs defense line for a Touchdown. Dan Gillespie ran the 2 point conversion in for a Portager 8-0 lead at the Half.

The second half was very much like the first: all defense without either team moving the ball very far before they had to punt or give it up on downs. With 23 seconds left in the game Mesick was ready to score with the ball on the 2 yard line . On the next play from scrimmage our Young Portagers  forced the ball loose from the Mesick running back as he was heading for the goal line and Thomas Koon fell on the loose ball on about the 2 yard line to recover the fumble and preserve the VICTORY for the JV football team by a final score of Onekama/Bear Lake 8 Mesick 0. These young Portagers ended the season with a 2-2-1 season.

Congratulations to Coach Roger Smith, assts Jesse Scudder and Jim Clouse and all the players on a successful season which had its up and downs with trying to get games scheduled.

Here's to all the parents who sat in the bleachers on this chilly day. May they get all the mud of those gold pants. I've been there and loved it all! ...Barb
