Onekama can’t fight off state champs

For the second straight year, Onekama squared off with Frankfort in the district tournament and for the second straight year Frankfort moved on.

The Portagers lost to the defending state champions Panthers on Monday night, 55-15.

Leading the way for Onekama, Kelsey Acker had five points.  Alyssa Cole had four points and five steals.  Marlee Herkelrath had two points and six rebounds, Carmen Howard had two points, Stephanie Ashworth had one point and Ronnie Maidens had one point and led Onekama in rebounding with seven boards.

For Frankfort, Nicole Marshall had 17 points and Brenna Bankston scored 13.  Onekama coach Candace Turk gave Frankfort credit.  “They are a well rounded team”, Turk said. “They’ve got some big guns.”

But, Turk said her players defended well tonight.  “We did a good job on defense, especially in the first half.  We held their big girls to under 20 points and most teams don’t do that.”

Unfortunately for Onekama, they couldn’t find the bottom of the basket enough.  “We struggled on the offensive end,” Turk said.  “We had opportunities, we just couldn’t put them in.”

Despite the loss, Turk is happy with her team.  “We could have played better, but we had a winning season,” Turk said.  She also thanked all of the supporters who came out this season and Monday night’s game.  “I am really pleased with the support our school has put up.”
