Past Stars of Onekama Basketball  Honored

October 17, 2006

Tonight if you haven’t noticed, we have all aspects of Onekama Girls’ Basketball in attendance.  We have our Future Stars who played their final exhibition game at the halftime of the JV game.  We have our 5th-8th grade players being highlighted. Our current players either just finished a good game or are getting ready to take the floor.   We also have 3 alumni players and their families here to receive a special recognition.

Up on the new yellow sign put by the Athletic Boosters and Dennis Zupin, you will find  3 names of the ladies who achieved a great mile stone in their careers here in Onekama and also in our program.  Lisa Ward-Zupin, Ashley Hart, and Mary Lynn Bradford all scored 1,000 points or more in their careers. This is an accomplishment that only a few ever achieve. Tonight we would like to honor them with an award for all of their hard work and great achievements as an Onekama Girls’ Basketball Player.

These three women through their hard work and athletic ability were able to accomplish something great.  Their achievements were and are the building blocks for our current players and future stars.  Thank you… Coach Candace Turk

  • #35 Lisa Ward-Zupin (1976-1979)  1,159 career points

  • #14 Ashley Hart (1999-2002)  1,200+ career points

  • #44 Mary Lynn Bradford (2001-2004)  1,197 career points

#35 Lisa Ward-Zupin was the first young women in our program to score 1,000 career points.  She finished her career with 1,159 points which is amazing given the fact it was only 6 years after schools were required to equal teams for girls because of Title 9.  Lisa was also Female Athlete of Year in 1980.  When spoken to about basketball, she said if anyone deserved to be honored it would be her role model Lori Bahrs who is now her sister in law, Lori Ward.  Lisa wasn’t able to make it here to night due to prior commitments, but here to receive her award are Kassidy and Danielle Ward who are following in their aunts and mom’s footsteps as an Onekama Basketball Players.

#14 Ashley Hart was the second player in our program to score 1,000 career points.  Ashley in her career scored 1,200 plus points.  A highlight from her career was in her junior year in the Regional final game against McBain Northern Michigan Christian she scored an unbelievable 8 3-pointers in a row.  Ashley is currently playing for Adrian College and just started practice yesterday so here to receive her award of her #14 jersey are her grandparents, Kay and Hogie Clouse and her father Jim Clouse.

#44 Mary Lynn Bradford is the latest Onekama Girls’ basketball player to score 1,000 career points.  Graduating only a few years ago, Mary Lynn is probably one of the most popular alumni players from our program at least when it comes to the girls coming out to play here tonight.  Mary Lynn scored 1,197 points and received many other honors like Female Athlete of the Year in 2004.  Mary is here tonight to get her award which is her jersey #44.
