Onekama at Mesick

August 30, 2006

It was a nail biter until the closing minutes of the game for the Onekama varsity basketball team as they traveled to Mesick.  The final score, unfortunately, fell in favor of Mesick by a small 6-point margin of difference, 41-35.

With five returning players and four junior varsity players joining the roster this season, the Portagers demonstrated a great sense of desire and competitive flare in their debut game.  Each player stepped up and filled the role requested of them no matter how large or how small a task.

Leading scorer and rebounder was Stephanie Ashworth with 14 points and 7 boards.  Kelsey Acker was right behind her in scoring with 7 points all coming from the free throw line.  Ronnie Maidens led our skin statistics with 27 ways she complimented and/or gave encouragement to a teammate.  She also had 3 assists and 4 points.  Kieran O’Connor was second highest giving skin to her teammates with 23 points while also dishing the ball out for 3 assists.  Carmen Howard played solid defense creating 2 steals and getting a basket for 2 points.  Marlee Herkelrath did a nice job communicating with teammates on the floor while helping to get a teammate a basket for 1 assist.  She finished the night with 17 skin points.  Stacey Keith and Chelsea Miller each played solid offensively and defensively. Stacey finished with points, while Chelsea hauled down some key rebounds.  Alyssa Cole smart aggressive defense led the team in steals with 5.

The Portagers are next in action
on Tuesday, Sept. 5, traveling to
Manistee Catholic where they
will take on the Sabers.
