Onekama's Ski Team: Feb. 10, 2006

The ski team added a last minute invitational to their schedule, Bellaire's, and some hardware was brought home. The boy's team was lacking BJ so no team scores for them, but the other three raced on for individual rankings. The girls teams all raced a very tight race. Bellaire handed out medals to the top 10 places. Regionals is right around the corner and it is crucial that all team members stay healthy and attend. The Portager/Laker/Bobcat team needs more depth to cover the misfortune of having someone out sick...please promote the ski team! Put down those snowboards and grab your skis for next year! Let's keep the ski team tradition at OHS going strong!

Girl's Team Slalom:

1st Clare 41pts
2nd Harrison 47 pts
3rd Inland Lakes 57
4th ONEKAMA 59pts tied
4th Bellaire 59pts tied
6th Grayling 72 pts
7th Elk Rapids 83 pts

Senior Dani Olson led her team to that 4th place finish in Slalom with her 9th place medal and times of :25.55 and :25.78. Emily Harwell finished just one place out of the medals with her times of :26.50 and :26.57 for 11th place. Kelli Waligorski slid in with :28.89 and :30.19 for 19th. Monika Higley placed 20th with :30.12 and :30.71. Bellaire's Rachel Eklund won the event with :23.00 and :23.81.

Girl's Team Giant Slalom:

1st Grayling 40pts
2nd Bellaire 47
3rd Harrison 52
4th Clare 54
5th Inland Lakes 61
6th Onekama 73
7th Elk Rapids 90

Clare's Emily Yurga won the Giant Slalom event with her runs of :21.89 and :21.75. OHS's Dani Olson finished just one place out of the medal for 11th with times of :23.60 and :22.74. Emily Harwell placed 15th with :23.91 and :23.85, Kelli Waligorski placed 23rd with :26.01 and :25.63 and Monika Higley finished 24th with her runs of :26.18 and :26.03. Coach Mathieu was pleased with the way the girls cleaned up their second runs taking time off from their first runs.

Bellaire's Tom Nichols won the Giant Slalom event with his runs of :20.64 and :21.25. Brethren's Jesse Ketchum racing for OHS led his team with a 7th place finish and medal with times of :22.45 and :22.26. Garret Samsal finished in 26th place due to some problems on his first run that ended with a time of :27.07. Garret's second run clocked a nice :23.64. Donny Olson placed 31st with :27.44 and 28.63.

Boy's Team Slalom:

4th Grayling 70.5
5th Bellaire 76
6th Inland Lakes 85.5
7th Onekama no team score

Elk Rapids's Brendon McKeon won the event with :20.32 and :20.56. Jesse Ketchum led the team tonight in Slalom placing just one place out of the medals with his runs of :23.17 and :23.38. Garret Samsal placed 17th with :25.11 and :25 flat. Donny Olson placed 30th with runs of :30.01 and :32.39.
