Golf Awards for 2005
The annual Golf Awards was held 10-20-05 at the High school, where a delicious dessert table had been set up to greet the team members and families. It's hard to believe that their season is over for the year, but the excitement about next year was all a buzz! While the team finished 3rd in the Conference this year and a so so season as far as wins, one must take into consideration that the bulk of the team was made up of Freshmen, and the teams they played outside the conference, were from very large schools to boot. The team had

Freshmen stepping up and shooting in the mid to low 40's before season's end and a few of them earned conference status and two qualifying for Regionals.

Coach Zadow commented that the schedule has already been set for next year and they will be meeting up with those same schools with the exception of the Gladiator Invitational. That school was given a limit of the number of schools they could invite by the Grand Traverse Resort and OHS was cut from that list. Coach Zadow is looking to possibly host a home tournament to fill the empty slot.

She also stated that she has left her "social calendar" open for the regional and state meets knowing the potential the team has for next year. It's right there, and next year could be theirs for the taking.

A photocopy of News Advocates' Jack Batdorff's Reflection's article was handed out for the enjoyment of all who attended. Jack's story tells about living next to the golf course in Manistee and how his dog shagged balls as the players tried to play on. It ended with a top ten list of one liners between caddies and players that his step brother sent him. Since these fly around from computer to computer by email daily, I thought we should put them here as well. I'm sure the team members can relate to some of these and spur more "memory" moments for them.

# 10  Golfer: "Think I'm going to drown myself in the next lake!"
Caddy: " Think you can keep your head down that long?"

#9    Golfer: "I'd move heaven and earth to break a hundred on this course!"
Caddy: "Try heaven, you've already moved most of the earth!"

#8   Golfer::" Do you think my game is improving?"
Caddy:  "Yes, sir. You miss the ball much closer now."

#7   Golfer: " Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?"
Caddy: " Eventually"

#6   Golfer: " You've got to be the worst caddy in the world!"
Caddy: "" I don't think so sir, that would be too much of a coincidence!"

#5   Golfer: " Please stop checking your watch! It is too much of a distraction!"
Caddy:" It's not a watch, it's a compass!"

#4  Golfer: '" How do you like my game?"
Caddy: " Very good sir, but personally, I prefer Golf."

#3  Golfer: " Do you think it's a sin to play on Sunday?"
Caddy:  " The way you play, sir, it's a sin any day?"

#2  Golfer:  " This is the worst course I've ever played on."
Caddy: " This isn't the golf course. We left that an hour ago!"

#1   Golfer:  " This isn't my ball. It's too old."
Caddy: " It's been a long time since we teed off, sir."

Reporter's comments: While these kids are not my own kids, they have grown on me. Following their strides through the season, it's hard not to get attached to each of them. The game of Golf is based on honesty, something the team members come by naturally or so it would seem. They play a fair game and don't lower their standards to match what other teams may do from time to time. This group is a class act. Something others should strive to be like when on the course.  I'm not the only one who sees this either, as several coaches from other schools have complimented Coach Zadow and her team for it as well. It's been an honor to be their reporter for yet another outstanding season of accomplishments. They have gone up against D through A schools and competed competitively with the majority of the members as freshmen. Next year brings even more promise as these young golfers continue to fine tune their game. Get excited, stay excited. I know I am, and I plan on following them to hopefully State next year!

Thank you, Coach Zadow for assisting with the web reporting, and most of all for the great coaching throughout the season. Thank you to Webmaster, Barb for her endless hours of computer time putting the pages up on the web! Last but not least...HUGS and WHISTLES Golf team.... Just outstanding! You make OHS proud!

Team members not in attendance tonight :Drew Griswold and Hunter Slade.

  • Levi Capper, 1st Team All Conference
  • Jordan Pomeroy, 1st Team All Conference
  • Drew Griswold: Participation Certificate
  • Hunter Slade: Varsity letter

^ Jordan Pomeroy earned his Golf Pin as well as the coveted Team Medalist title. Levi Capper and Jordan constantly traded being lowmen for the team this year, however, Jordan edged out Levi with his 45.6 average to Levi's 46.1, or by 1/2 a stroke to earn the title. Jordan's memory moment: When golfing with Parker, Parker hit a condo at the Heathlands. Coach Zadow asked if they played it where it laid, and they laughed. Seems a gentleman had to retrieve the ball for them.

The team finished 7th at Districts just one place away from qualifying for Regionals, however, Jordan and Parker qualified as individuals. While the state does not have an award for this qualification, Coach Zadow wanted to recognize them for their accomplishment. She purchased new balls with the Cedar Chase logo on them and hand made plaques for them.

Todd Lyman earned his Golf pin. Todd's memory moment: At the Country Club, in "gale force" winds he is amazed that he shot his best game of the season. This was the very game where the MCC coach complimented him on his consistent swings even in the horrible winds the kids faced that day.

Josh Briggs earned his Varsity letter. Josh's memory moment: We got to hear a little more about the rainy day that Parker's golf club ended up in a tree...seems they were then chased off the course by lightning! Josh then added one more memory. He was using a new driver and teed too high. His ball went really high, straight up in the air and he just reached out and caught it in his hand as it came back down! Josh commented that yes, he was able to recreate that!

Freshman Parker Johnson earned his Varsity letter. Parker's memory moment: Seems he got caught in a rainstorm golfing with Josh. His glove became extremely soaked, things weren't going well, and he ended up throwing his golf club "70 feet" up into a tree. The club eventually fell back down to his relief.

Tim Veverica earned his Golf pin. Tim's memory moment; As he stroked his chin like he does so often when speaking, he talked of a HUGE hit with his 5 iron at the Heathlands on the back 9. Tim turned his woods over to Coach Zadow before a match one day saying he wouldn't be needing them. Tim had been working on getting over slicing and when he started using his irons instead, his game rapidly improved.

Josh Cebula earned his golf pin this year. Josh's memory moment: While Josh leaves lot's of memories for the rest of us during the season, he could not think of any until some of us spoke up for him. I remembered the last hole at the Manistee Country Club, where a player from another school picked up his ball and placed it in the sandtrap just off the green. He came up the fairway knowing his ball had not landed there, but played it out where it laid anyway. No fuss, no squabble, just finished his game.. Now that's a class act! (His score still beat that other players score)

Parker Johnson earned Honorable Mention in the Conference selections. Congratulations Parker!

Coach Zadow was pleased to present Jordan with his 1st Team All Conference Medal. Levi Capper (not present) also earned this honor. Congratulations Jordan and Levi!

Mike Swanson blushes as Coach Zadow speaks of how hard he worked during the season this year as Manager. Being manager for a sports team is very hard work and he stepped up to the task. Thank you, Mike, for all your effort.

Donny Olson received his participation certificate. Donny's memory moment: " A really good drive at the 5th hole at the Heathlands". Coach Zadow agreed.
