The
Portager's traveled to Lake City for the 2nd Annual Terry
Thompson Golf Invitational held at the Missauke Golf Club
on August 26th, 2005. The Club is located at the corner
of M55 and M66 south of Lake City. The Teams were divided
into two divisions, the Black division, which appeared to
be the smaller schools and the Red Division which
included the larger schools. There were 2 exceptions to
the Red Div.: one of which was MCC. Previous shooting
scores must have played some role in the divisions along
with school size. Onekama played in the Black Division
and placed 6th out of 10 teams with a team score of 374.
This invitational allowed only 5 shooters to compete for
the day and only the 4 lowest scores were kept for the
final team score. Team competition was close as far as
scores today and even the most minor mistakes would play
a part in a team's final position. Playing 18 holes, Onekama's Low man was Jordan Pomeroy shooting an 86 for the day. Freshman Levi Capper shot a very nice 92 as well as Freshman Drew Griswold 92. It should be noted that this is both Levi's and Drew's first Invitational and shooting 92's as freshman is to be applauded. Todd Lyman and Parker Johnson each shot 104. Only one of the 104's was used to round out the scoring four's team effort of 374 for the day. Farwell took first place in the Black Division with their team effort of 320. Kalkaska won the Red Division with 315 and were also the overall winner for the day. MCC shot 336 as a team and Manistee High 339 to put the scoring into perspective. |
The
Portagers head off today, 8-31-05,for Pinecroft to play
Frankfort and possibly Leland. It is rumored that Leland
does not have a team this year, so i guess we find out
when they get there. Some of our returning members are
very familiar with this beautiful, yet challenging
course, and the rest did get to play 18 holes on it just
a couple weeks back. The way our Freshmen are playing
right now should make for a very good match. The team will
return to play a match at home, The Heathlands, Tomorrow,
9-1-05, against Mesick. After last years scrimmage with
Mesick, both teams had so much fun, they wanted to play
each other again, so they get their wish. It should be
another great day. Come out and support your team. Both
you and the team will be happy you did! *NOTE* To the
team members, I will be coming to matches soon to take
photos and cover your matches in person. I have been sick
with a respiratory bug and we all remember how one
rippled through the team last year..I need "my"
team healthy and fit for the up coming matches! Until
then, Hit them long and straight! Gwen |
