Portagers Sweep Doubleheader April 5th

HART -- Onekama opened the high school baseball season Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader with Hart Lakeshore Academy, 14-3 and 18-0 in a pair of games that didn't go beyond five innings because of the scores.

Despite temperatures that dipped into the mid-30's before the second game started, the Portagers enjoyed a good day at the plate and in the field.

The Portagers' bats heated up in the cold weather, while the defense did not make an error in either game.

Nate Griswold led the Onekama hitting attack in the first game, with three safeties. He also drove in two runs.

Joey Mitchell topped the team with three runs batted in on his two base hits, while Matt Fredericks had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

Dave Gillespie pitched the first two innings, before Onekama coach John Neph went with Griswold to close the game out over the final three innings.

"This early in the season, with the cold weather, I don't want to use my pitchers too much," Neph said.

Besides, the Portagers are gearing up for the Western Michigan D League season, which promises to be challenging.

Game two only went two innings, with Lance Osborn on the mound for the first and Tyler Miller throwing the last two.

Miller was the Portagers' leading hitter in the nightcap with three, and he drove in three runs.

Griswold had two hits and two runs batted in. Mitchell had two more hits, and drove in three runs. Fredericks had two hits and two runs batted in, and Trevor Miller added two base hits.

Coach Neph is pleased with the team's success

Onekama (2-0) is at home Friday for a non-league doubleheader against Mesick, weather permitting, starting at 4 p.m.
