9/6 | at Mason County Eastern | Tonight in varsity basketball action, the Portagers were defeated by MCE with a final of 25-50. More: Photos and Text |
9/8 | Northport Away | Last night in varsity basketball action, the Portagers were defeated by Northport by a final of 40-42. After opening with a particularly slow first quarter and a rather eye opening first half, the Portagers found themselves having to dig themselves out of a hole. Determined to climb out of the 17-28 halftime hole, the team battled back in the 3rd and 4th quarters continually chipping away at the Northport lead just down by two each quarter. In the end when the buzzer sounded the Portagers, fell short in points, but not in pride. Stephanie Ashworth lead all scorers with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alyssa Cole finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Ginny Ashworth chipped in 6 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Marlee Herkelrath had 5 points and 5 rebounds. Ronnie Maidens contributed 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist. Kelsey Acker knocked down a big 3 and had 7 assists. Bonnie Harthun finished with 2 points despite an ankle injury. The Portagers are next in action on Tuesday at Walkerville. |
9/13 | at Walkerville | Despite another great effort with huge offensive and defensive plays and improvements, the Onekama Varsity Girls' Basketball team fell to Walkerville with a score of 40-63. Although the score doesn't reflect it, we are steps closer to getting over the nagging hurdles of missed opportunities and details that we have struggled with all season. Stephanie Ashworth lead scorers with 11 points. Kelsey Acker finally starting to adjust to one of her new roles as a point guard, finished with 9 points and 2 assists. Ronnie Maidens had 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist. Bonnie Harthun toughing out an ankle injury suffered in Thursday night's game at Northport played solid both offensively and defensively, taking a tough charge and finishing with 6 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds. Marlee Herkelrath did a nice job creating scoring opportunities finishing with 3 points. Alyssa Cole and Ginny Ashworth dominated the glass each pulling down 7 rebounds putting a limit on Walkerville's inside threat. The Portagers are now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. |

9/27 | at Baldwin | Tonight in varsity basketball action, your Portagers earned their second straight win defeating a very physical and vocal Baldwin team by a score of 54-42. Now 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the league, this was a huge win with great sportsmanship displayed throughout the entire game. The Ashworth sisters dominated the glass combining for 30 rebounds. Stephanie Ashworth led scorers with 15 points. Bonnie Harthun was next in scoring with 11 points, 4 assists, 3 blocks. Alyssa Cole and Ronnie Maidens each had 8 points, while Marlee Herkelrath finished with 6 points. Ginny Ashworth battled hard inside contributing 4 points, and Kelsey Acker finished with 2 points and 3 assists. |
9/29 | Pentwater at Home | In the first home game of the season with a nice sized crowd, the Portagers came away with a big victory over the Pentwater Falcons with a score of 37-34. Photographs and Results |
10/4 | MCE at home | The varsity girls' basketball team ended its three game winning streak with a loss to MCE by a score of 25-42. Now, 3-4 in the league and 3-6 overall, this second show down demonstrated many overall Portager improvements, although foul trouble and missed free throw line continue to be a weakness. 10/6 | Walkerville at Home | The varsity basketball team drops to 3-7 overall and 3-5 in the league with a loss to Walkerville by a score of 66-49. Game Photos, etc. |
10/11 | Traverse City Christian at Home | A
great effort, down three different times by seven or more
points, the Portagers battled back each time to be
tied with just 21 seconds left in the game. Great
patients and execution along with huge 3 point shots from
Bonnie Harthun and Ronnie Maidens put
the Portagers in a great position to win
the game. In the end, Onekama was defeated
by T.C. Christian by two with a score
of 49-51. Bonnie Harthun led scoring with
14 pts of which 12 points came from behind the arc. She
also had 8 rebounds. Alyssa Cole was right behind with 10
points, 8 boards, 3 steals, and 2 assists.
Marlee Herkelrath was an offensive
threat inside scoring 8 points and pulling down
5 rebounds. Ginny Ashworth came alive with
7 pts, 4 assists, and 6 rebounds.
Kelsey Acker played very solid out
front finishing with 6 points and 4
assists. Ronnie Maidens huge three point shot with
21 seconds left in the game left her with 5 points
and 4 assists. Stephanie Ashworth was
key inside on defense with 5 boards and 1
steal. The Portagers are very
pleased with the effort put forth continuing to
improve on details. They finished with only 10

10/18 | Bear Lake at Home | The Portagers stood their ground as the Bear Lake Lakers came into Onekama Gymnasium seeking revenge, winning by a final score 65-43. This win snapped a four game losing streak. Now 4-9 overall, the Portagers were in good company with elementary and middle school team parents and players who were being recognized. 10/25 | Baldwin at home | Tonight the Portagers came away with their second straight win defeating Baldwin 66-43. Now 5-6 in the league, this win puts the Portagers one step closer to maintaining 4th place in the league. Coach's game report and photos by Jaylee |
10/27 | at Pentwater | Jet lagged from the 1st bus trip in 8 games or frozen from the air conditioned gym, the Portagers came out flat from the get go and never recovered, finishing league play with a 75-38 loss to Pentwater. This loss drops Onekama to 5-7 in the conference and 5-10 overall. Leading the Portagers in scoring was Bonnie Harthun with 9 points, followed by Alyssa Cole and Ronnie Maidens each with 7. Ginny Ashworth led in rebounds, pulling down 10. Ronnie Maidens picked off 3 steals, while Kelsey Acker dished out 4 assists. The Portagers are back at home on Tuesday against a solid Manistee Catholic Central team. |

Manistee Catholic at home | Despite battling hard against a quick Manistee Catholic team, the Portagers drop to 5-11 overall with a final score of 30-43. The Portagers struggled all night to execute on offense making it challenging to counteract the Saber lead. Bonnie Harthun led Onekama with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Alyssa Cole followed with 7 points, 3 steals and 3 rebounds. Marlee Herkelrath had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Kelsey Acker dished out 5 assists and 4 points. Defensively, the Portagers worked well together to contain MCC threats and limit scoring opportunities. As a whole the team finished with 9 steals and only 11 turnovers. Two games in a row, the Portagers have achieved their turnover goal. |
11/7 Monday |
Lakeshore Public Academy at home (JV Plays with Varsity) | With a full bench in good company with the Junior Varsity team, the Portagers defeated Lakeshore Public Academy 46-41, bringing their record to 6-11. The game was of rather slow tempo with the Portagers struggling on both ends of the floor. Heading into halftime, junior varisty Carmen Howard hit a 15 footer to tie us up at 24. The second half the Portagers came out with a 22-17 advantage led by Bonnie Harthun with 13 points, and Marlee Herkelrath, Kelsey Acker, Alyssa Cole all contributing 6 points. Stephanie Ashworth had 5 points. Ronnie Maidens and Ginny Ashworth each finished 4 points. Rebounds were evenly distributed with Stephanie Ashworth pulling down 10. Alyssa Cole picked off 6 steals while Ronnie Maidens and Kelsey Acker worked together to each have 4 steals. Junior Varsity players rose to the varsity challenge each doing a nice contributing in the 1st and second halves. We look forward to their presence in Districts. Photos |

Northport at Home | Photos & Coach's Report Parent's Night, Senior Highlights, and revenge were all on the list as motivators for the Onekama Portagers as they looked to conclude their season against the Northport Wildcats. Coming out it was back and forth, but heading into halftime Northport led 27-18. The third quarter belonged to the Wildcats, but the Portagers battled back in the fourth outscoring them 18-12. In the end it wasn't enough as Onekama dropped to 6-12 overall with a final score of 53-40 . |

District game against Buckley at Frankfort | The Portagers couldn't be more pleased with their performance tonight against the Buckley Bears in the semi-final game of Districts. It was a tough, competitive game with neither team backing down. The Portagers knew they had to win all four quarters, which is exactly what they did, taking care of business, winning 37-32. District game against Frankfort at 7 PM. | Photographs by Lynn The Portagers finished their season with a 22-65 loss, putting them at 7-13 overall. Frankfort went on to become State Champs. Thanks to all the parents, staff, students, and community members who have supported our efforts all season.
