ONEKAMA — Bear Lake held an 11-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, 61-50, but it wasn’t as safe as it appeared. A couple of turnovers, and the Portagers climbed right back into the game, trailing by only one, 65-64, with under a minute left in the fourth quarter. The Lakers got the clinching basket from Anthony Reedy, and Clayton Setzer hauled in a big defensive rebound after Onekama missed its last shot, securing Bear Lake’s thrilling 69-66 win. Bear Lake also lost a double figure lead in the first meeting between the two Manistee County and Western Michigan D League rivals, and managed to survive for a 54-48 conquest of the Portagers. Friday night’s win was especially important, because it lifted the Lakers into sole possession of first place in the WMD, following Brethren’s 59-50 victory over Baldwin. The Lakers improved their record to 9-2 in the conference. Baldwin, Onekama and Brethren are all tied for second with 8-3 records. “I want to tell you what ... these kids are going to be back for two more years (except for senior guard Josh Groenwald),” Bear Lake coach Bryan Groenwald said. "So, this is a sweet spot to be in this late in the season. To be alone in first place in the league ... that’s just super. This is just kind of telling what might be in store for these guys.”

Clayton Setzer had easily his best night of the season for the Lakers, scoring 20 points and hauling down eight rebounds. Several were off the offensive glass, and resulted in second-chance baskets. “He’s playing like a man,” Groenwald said.
J.J. Randall and Josh Groenwald were both in early foul trouble, and played through it. Randall had four personal fouls by halftime, and Groenwald picked up three. Neither fouled out, despite playing for all but a few minutes at the end of the second and third quarters. “That shows real maturity,” coach Groenwald said. “J.J. played the whole second half with four fouls. I can’t take him out. We just have to have him on the court. “We pulled him at the end of the second quarter for a little bit, and right at the end of the third quarter, just to make sure. But, we just can’t be without him for long.”

Reedy finished with 16 points, followed by Nick Swisher with 14, Groenwald 11 and Randall eight. Groenwald dished out 11 assists and ripped down seven rebounds, Setzer picked off three steals. Reedy added three steals and three assists for the Lakers. Swisher had three steals and one assist.

“The kids played hard,” Onekama coach Jerry Brown said of the Portagers, who dropped to 12-4 overall. “I’m really proud of my kids. Bear Lake, too. They (the Lakers) played a whale of a ball game.

“Bear Lake overcame a lot of obstacles. They got in early foul trouble, and the court turning into a skating rink (because of the humidity in the gym from the overflow crowd). “It changed everyone’s game. Everyone had to adjust. You just have to hand it to all those kids out on the court. They didn’t complain, they just dealt with it, and played their hardest to make things happen.”

Onekama had a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was 42-42 at the half. The Lakers looked like they’d take charge of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Portagers, 17-8, to take a 59-50 lead. Setzer scored eight points in the third quarter for the Lakers. Joey Mitchell then hit a pair of 3-pointers to ignite the Portagers’ offense, and they crept to within 65-64. That was as close as Onekama got.

Griswold finished the game with a game-high 28 points for the Portagers. Matt Fredericks had 16, Joey Mitchell eight, Ryan Brown five, Taylor Fraly three, Nate Milarch four and Milan Cvetkovic two.

“My only regret was that, toward the end of the game we had an important possession, and I drew up a play my guys had never seen before,” Brown said.

I asked them to go out and run an in-bounds play we’ve never even run in practice, for a shot we were trying to get with two seconds left. That was totally on my shoulders.”

The Lakers won the junior varsity game, 90-83, in overtime. Bear Lake hosts Baldwin on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
