34-7 Vestaburg
Coach Hunter stated that he was very proud of the team's effort against Vestaburg. They are big in body size and are now 6-1 in the record books this year. Senior Tom Gillespie commented that they didn't just run away with the game as the score might lead some to think. OHS got the ball to the 10 yard line, carrying it down the entire field several times, but just couldn't convert. Vestaburg logged in 413 yards offensively and had 22 1st downs to Onekama's 260 yards offensively and 15 1st downs. The first quarter stood at 6-0 Vestaburg. The first half ended with a score of 14-0 Vestaburg. The Portagers held them to 20-0 in the 3rd quarter and then Tom Gillespie ran in a touchdown for OHS in the top of the 4th. Vestaburg answered that with one of their own putting the score at 27-7 Vestaburg. Vestaburg scored one final time in the bottom of the 4th, ending the game with a score of 34-7 Vestaburg. Dustin Thomas led in carries with 18 for 88 yards. Dave Gillespie had 11 carries and Senior Tom Gillespie had 10 carries for 80 yards and made the only Portager touchdown for the game. JJ Randall had 3 carries for 13 yards. Dansby got some carries in as well. On the Defensive side, Brett Cronkhite led in tackles with 14. Senior Dustin Thomas had 10, JJ Randall 9 and Taylor Fraley 8. Dustin Thomas, Brett Cronkhite and Brandon Schram each had one tackle for loss.

*note* Dustin Thomas was injured in the 4th quarter and was carried off the field and taken to the hospital as a precaution.. Coach Hunter reports that all xrays were fine and DT will be fine soon. A pulled Trapezius was the culprit. The team has Fraly as QB to fill in if Dustin can't play in the next game. While it certainly isn't a good feeling to lose a Senior or any player to injury, the team is doing a super job of stepping up and filling shoes. Brandon Hilliard is recovering as well as a couple of other Portagers.

Next weekend is Homecoming against Montabella where it will be Mid-State North vs Mid-State South again. The teams are fairly evenly matched with Onekama standing at second in our Conference and Montabella at third in theirs. A Thank you goes out to Gillespies for calling me after the game with the results as well as Coach Hunter for calling me with the stats and details of the game.
