12/8 Away 6:00 | Petoskey | On the 12/08/04 Frankfort traveled to Petoskey for a triangular meet with Roger City,Petoskey and Frankfort. For the evening in the 103 weight class Justin Zupin(OHS) was 0-2, In the 119 class Josh Cebula(OHS) was 0-1,The 125 class Nathan Morrill(OHS) was 0-1, In the 135 class Charles Beale(FHS) was 1-1, In the 145 class Tommy Johnson(FHS) was 1-0 In the 152 class RJ Rafferty(FHS) was 1-0 In the 171 class Mike Cole (OHS) was 1-1 and in the 215 class Bobby Rice(FHS) was 0-1. |
12/11 Away 10:00 | Ludington | On the 12/11/04 the Frankfort wrestling team went to Ludington. To take part in the Ludington INV. For the day in the 103 weight class Justin Zupin was 0-2, In the 112 class Josh Cebula was 2-2 and finished 6th place for a Medal, In the 125 class Nathan Morrill was 0-2, In the 135 class Charles Beale was 3-1 and finished 5th place for a Medal, In the 140 class Lee Rienhart was 0-2, In 152 class RJ Rafferty was 2-2 and finished in 4th place for a Medal, In the 152 class Brandon Leonard Petit was 4-0 and took home first place with a Medal, In the 160 class Mike Cole was 4-0 and took home the 1st place Medal and In the 160 class Tommy Johnson was 3-1 and took home the 6th place Medal as the wrestlers brought home a few Medals today. |
12/15 Away 6:00 | T.C. West | In a tri-meet held Wednesday December 15, Frankfort team came out ahead of Forest Area winning 48-30. Posting wins for the Panthers were Justin Zupin 103 lb, Josh Cebula 119lb, Nathan Morrill, 125lb. Chuck Beale 135 lb, Lee Rineheart 140 lb, Tommy Johnson 145 lb. Brandon Leonard 152 lb and Michael Cole 171 lb. Against TC West Frankfort came up short with a 36-48 loss. With the points awarded to Zupin, Beale, Rineheart, Johnson, Leonard and Cole. Photographs |
12/19 Away | Meet in U.P. | Frankfort Varsity Wrestling participated in the annual bridge brawl in Rudyard Friday. In the first round Frankfort beat Manistique 42-30. In round two Frankfort lost 12-55 to Rudyard. Round three Frankfort lost toSt.Ignace 18-66. Round four matched Frankfort to Negaunee, Negaunee came out on top 54-20. 12/26 | FHS Wrestlers story | One
third of the way through the season, the Frankfort matmen
are posting impressive numbers. Most of the team members
have wrestled 10 or more matches and have come out on
top. "Our guys are progressing, we have a good
chance at winning the district if we keep up our training
pace," said Coach Irv Petit. The wrestlers adhere to
strict MHSAA weight loss standards and can not compete if
underweight by body fat %. The wrestling coach's job is
not only to teach moves and countermoves but nutrition
and body discipline also. Each teammate must be in top
physical condition to wrestle a match at 100% effort.
"The dedication to training is evident in our
numbers" said Petit. Mike Cole has the best record
so far with 12 wins and 3 losses. Brandon Leonard and Tom
Johnson both are at 11 wins 5 losses. Also on the plus
side of the matches is RJ Rafferty with 5 wins of 9
matches. The Freshmen of the team are gaining experience
and winning. Justin Zupin has 6 wins for 15 times on the
mat. Josh Cebula is even at 6 and 6. Chuck Beale wrestled
in the Jr High program and is making the transition to
Varsity with 8 wins in 17 matches. The team rounds out
with Zack Fix earning 1 win before suffering a shoulder
injury. "We look forward to Zack being at full force
soon" added Assistant coach Mike Smith. Lee Rinehart
returned this year after an ankle injury last season. Lee
is coming back strong with 3 wins in 8 matches. Nate
Morrill has seen 2 wins this year and is hungry for more.
Bob Rice continues training for his weight class and has
seen the mat 3 times. The team looks forward to their home invitational hosting 10 teams, Saturday Jan 8th beginning at 10am. "It's always a great day, and we see a lot of talent in our guys" said Coach Smith. Two more home matches are scheduled. Thursday January 20th 6:30pm and Thursday Feb 3rd 6:30pm. "The parents have supported us at away meets, but is nice to be in our home gym" added Petit. The Panther Pinners hold their annual fundraiser New Years Day. A can/bottle drive will be held at Glen's Market, January 1st from 10-2. If you are unable to bring your returnables to the store, pick up service is available. 1/20 Frankfort 6:30 | Kalkaska Kingsley | Injuries and the cold and flu season plagued the Panthers at their first home meet. "more than half our team is out" said Caoch Irv Pettit. "This was not a good week to be sick. Kalkaska and Kingsley both have tough squads". In the first match against Kalkaska, three forfeit wins were awarded to the Purple and Gold. They were to Justin Zupin 103 weight class, R.J. Rafferty 145 weight class and Mike Cole 160 weight class. Kalkaska defeated the Panthers 64-18. Against Kingsley in match two, the only Panther to post a win was Josh Cebula. Cebula 112 lb, pinned Kayla Kelly in 1:22. Justin Zupin 103 class lost a 2-12 decision, Nathan Morrill 119 class lost a 3-7 decision, R.J.Rafferty 145 class lost 5-15 decision and Kurt lost in 150 class and Mike Cole lost 8-18 decision in the 160 class. 1/22 away 10:00 | Charlevoix | The matmen traveled to Charlevoix Saturday Jan 22, to participate in the second annual take down tournament. In take down scoring, points are awarded when a wrestler gains control of his opponent. The referee restarts the two facing each other after each takedown, resulting in 3 one minute periods of speed wrestling. Even with the unusual format, illness and injuries, the Panthers brought home four medals. The days action pitted RJ Rafferty 145 lb, against Ryan Conklin of Manistee. Rafferty won 5-4. At 152 lb Brandon Leonard Pettit won by technical fall 15-0 over Zack Szoliet of Forest Area. Leonard gained his second win also by technical fall besting Kingsleys Danny Waurzniak 17-2. Justin Zupin fought all 3 periods winning in the final seconds 5-4 over his opponent. Zupin earned a 3rd place medal for his efforts. The Panthers 112lb Josh Cebula won his match by technical fall 15-0, placing hin in the consolation pairings. Rafferty was another medal hopeful after a technical fall win 17-2. Cebual suffered an injury in his final match. "He didn't want to give up, he kept trying right to the end" said Pettit. Cebula came home with a wrist splint and 4th place medal. rafferty also earned 4th place. The final match paired him again with manistee's Conklin. The Chippewa bested rafferty 5-4. In the 152 lb class, Leonard fought hard for the top spot. Dillon Hudson of Kalkaska earned the gold over Leonard by three points. "We still have guys out sick and two injuries in Charlevoix" said Pettit. The Panthers are at home Thursday Feb 3 and Conference finals are scheduled the 5th at TC central. "We hope to have the full team together soon" he added. |

2/5 Away 9:00 | Conf at TCC | The past week has been a whirlwind for Panther wrestler, Brandon Leonard-Pettit. Not only was he awarded 3rd overall Mid Michigan Conference on Feb 5th, he won his 100th match on Feb 9th and earned the title of Most Valuable Wrestler on Saturday the 12th. The 152 lb Junior wrestled perfectly winning 5-5 at The Petosky Invitational, to earn 1st place in his weight class and the MVW distinction. "The 100th win is a high point for any wrestler, but the MVW, now that's something else" said Coach Irv Pettit. The Panther squad is gearing up for Team District competition Thursday and Individuals on Saturday. The purple and gold will host the team event, with matches starting at 6:30pm. "We've had a good season. We only lost two from our original bunch. Zack Fix, 171lb, suffered a shoulder injury early in the season, Kirt Rosamilia stepped up to fill a 140 lb vacancy" added assistant coach Mike Smith. The young team has seen some tough matches. Comprised mostly of Freshmen and Sophomores, they are taking cues from the lone Junior, Leonard-Pettit. He has shown that hard work and training are rewarded. The Panthers boast 3 Conference placers. Justin Zupin at 103 lb, Mike Cole 160 lb and Leonard-Pettit each earned a 3rd at the event held at TC West Feb 5th. Later in the week, in a "pick up" match with Mancelona and Forest Area, the matmen lost to Mancey 16-49 but came back strong against Forest Area winning 48-18. ...Deb Rafferty |
2/12 Away 10:00 | Petoskey Inv | The Petoskey Invitational Feb 12th proved to be a good pre-district trial for the Panthers. Others posting wins for the day were Justin Zupin 1-5, Josh Cebula 2-5, Nathan Morrill, 1-5, Charles Beale, 2-5, Tom Johnson 3-5 and Mike Cole 4-5 "By now, our guys are familiar with the others in their weight class" said Pettit "We'll see most of them again in our home gym on the 17th. 2/16 Frankfort 6:30 | Team Districts | Frankfort held
the Team District at Frankfort. In the first pairing
FHS/OHS beat Forest Area to advance to the district
finals and Kinglsey beat Manton to advance to the
District finals. Where Kinglsey beat our mat men by a
score of 10-64 to be crowned District champs. In the

2/19 Away | Ind. Districts at Manton | The FHS/OHS
mat men traveled to Manton for the Individual district in
division 4.
Congratulations to our wrestlers on their season for all the time and effort they have invested. Special notice to Zac Fix whom was sidelined with injuries just about all season but came to practices and meets to offer support for his teammates. Also to Coach Irv Petitt and Asst. Mike Smith and to the parents for traveling with the team to some far away places. Thank you for being there for the wrestlers to give them support as this is a young group of boys. Congratulations to Brandon Leonard-Petitt on getting your 100th victory of your career and for being named the Most Valuable Player at the Petoskey INV.
