Onekama Ski Team Welcomes Brethren High School !

On October 13th, 2004, Onekama Officially welcomed Brethren High to our Ski Team Co-op. The Ski Team now is a combination of Onekama, Bear Lake and Brethren. Brethren has had an excellent ski program for years and are now joining forces with experienced Bear Lake and Onekama racers to become a force to be dealt with on the courses. OHS welcomes you!

Hall of Famer, Coach Dale Miller, held a short meeting to fill everyone in of the Training Clinic/Trip to Copper Mt. in Colorado as well as the up coming Ski swap that will be held at Crystal Mt. The Swap will be held Oct 30th and the Colorado trip is scheduled for Dec. 10th. Once again, he is planning a clinic here in Michigan at Boyne where we hope all racers can attend which should be shortly after the Colorado training.

The Team is still looking for new members male or female, however the girls team would like to add a few more to their roster. There is still time to join. If anyone is interested in the Colorado trip, they should get with Coach Miller in the next few days as reservations must be made soon! A $300.00 deposit secures your seat on the plane and a spot in the clinic.

Dryland training will kick in shortly and training will be rotated at each school once it begins. Brethren has a nice weight room facility and Bear Lake is known for their excellent running courses. We all know about the OHS school hill that the coaches love to use for training. *grin*

Coach Miller plans on soccer matches again this year to build team effort and agility. Once the snow flies, the team will be on the hill at Crystal Mt.

In the front, left to right, veteran racers Dani Olson (OHS) and Monika Higley (BLHS)listen as Coach Miller explains how a few more female racers would be a nice addition to the team. Mrs. Samsal and Mr.Higley listen as well. The Boy's team seems to have 7-9 members to date and the girls 4-5. If anyone is interested in joining a team that went to State last year and is Coached by a Michigan Coach Hall of Fame Coach, contact any ski team member , Coach Curt Mathieu or Coach Dale Miller.

Coach Curt Mathieu visits with Mr. and Mrs. Samsal during the get together. Their son Garret has joined the ski team co-op. Mr. Samsal is a River Guide and was very interesting to visit with.

My apologies to the boys...this wasn't the best picture of you...*blush* ...Don't worry Garret, like they warned you, I will be taking photos all season! Left, Garret Samsal from Brethren is one of the new members on the ski team. He is a hockey player and is also known for his trick skiing and snowboarding. Garret will be joining the group going out to Colorado. Welcome to the Ski Team! On the right, Senior and veteran racer Chris Smith (OHS), is eager to hit the slopes.
